The engagement of the United States in the Mexican drug war in the years 1971-2015 from the perspective of the critical security studies

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá zapojením Spojených států do "války proti drogám" v Mexiku v letech 1971-2015 za využití teoretických východisek tzv. velšské školy kritických bezpečnostních studií, mezinárodní politické sociologie a přístupu harm reduction. Práce analyzuje vybrané aspekty, kterými se Spojené státy zapojily do boje proti obchodu s drogami v Mexiku, ale zabývá se i politickým a bezpečnostním vývojem a vývojem obchodu s drogami v Mexiku v rámci sledovaného období. V závěru práce jsou poté zhodnoceny důsledky zapojení Spojených států a v souladu s nimi jsou zde zvažovány možné alternativy války proti drogám vycházející z přístupu harm reduction.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the engagement of the United States in the "war on drugs" in Mexico in 1971-2015, using the theoretical basis of the Welsh School of Critical Security Studies, International Political Sociology and the harm reduction approach. The thesis analyzes selected aspects of the United States involvement in the fight against drug trafficking in Mexico and focuses also on the political and security developments and the development of drug trafficking in Mexico over the selected period. In the final part of the thesis, the implications of the United States' involvement in the war on drugs in Mexico are assessed and alternative approaches to drug related issues based on the harm reduction approach are considered.
