Strategies for using tablets in Biology lessons

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce nese název Strategie učení s tabletem ve výuce přírodopisu. Hlavním cílem práce bylo navrhnout efektivní strategie výuky s tabletem ve výuce přírodopisu na základní škole pro překonání kritických míst kurikula. Po načerpání teoretických znalostní prostřednictvím sestavení rešerše proběhla přípravná šetření, která pomohla upřesnit hlavní výzkum. Pomocí dotazníkového šetření pro učitele základních škol, byl zjištěn jejich pohled na zařazení mobilních technologií do výuky. Učitelé v nich spatřují motivující prvek pro žáky a databanku informací, na druhou stranu ale mají obavy nejen z toho, že sami neumí tablety dostatečně ovládat, ale také z toho, že je obtížné zajistit, aby se žáci věnovali opravdu probírané látce a ne prohlížení internetu. Problémem se jeví také nedostatečné pokrytí školy stabilním wi-fi připojením. Důležité pro náš výzkum bylo stanovit kritická místa kurikula přírodopisu v 6. ročníku. Z realizace polostrukturovaných rozhovorů vzešla tato témata: buňka, viry a bakterie, fotosyntéza, systematika bezobratlých a vznik života na Zemi. Kritická jsou, dle učitelů, zejména pro svou abstraktnost, objem informací či náročnost pochopení z důvodu neznalosti chemie v šestém ročníku. Následně byly navrženy tři strategie, jak tato kritická místa překonat při výuce přírodopisu s využitím mobilních zařízení. Tyto strategie jsou koncipovány tak, aby obsáhly různé části hodiny a aby byly, pokud možno, po jisté úpravě použitelné i pro další ročníky. Jedná se o práci s aplikací Kahoot!, Piccollage a Quizlet. Strategie byly otestovány během školního roku 2018/2019. S učiteli byl následně realizován další polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Všechny navržené strategie hodnotí učitelé pozitivně a vidí v nich přínos do své výuky, avšak s největším ohlasem se setkala aplikace Kahoot!. Jsou však patrné také obavy z nadměrného využívání technologií v životě žáka. Názory učitelů pomohly sestavit sadu doporučení pro práci s tablety ve výuce přírodopisu. Doporučení vyzývají k efektivnímu používání mobilních technologií při zachování kontaktu s přírodou, např. pomocí terénní výuky.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis is called Strategies for Using Tablets in Biology Lessons. The main objective of the thesis was to design effective strategies for using tablets in teaching Biology at primary schools in order to deal with critical areas of the curriculum. After gathering theoretical knowledge through the research of available literature and compiling the literature review, preliminary surveys were conducted, which helped to refine the main research. A questionnaire survey for primary school teachers was conducted to understand their view on the inclusion of mobile technologies in classroom learning. Teachers consider mobile technologies a motivating element for pupils and a database of information, but, on the other hand, their main concern is not only the fact that they themselves are not able to control the tablets properly, but also that it is difficult to make sure that the pupils are fully involved in the lesson and not browsing the Internet. Insufficient wireless coverage in the school providing a stable WiFi connection also seems to be a problem. It was important for our research to determine critical areas in Biology curriculum for the 6th Grade. The following topics arose from semi-structured interviews we have conducted with the teachers: the cell, viruses and bacteria, photosynthesis, the classification of invertebrates and the origin of life on Earth. According to the teachers, these are critical especially for their abstractness, large amount of information or difficulty of understanding due to pupils not being familiar with chemistry for the 6th grade. Subsequently, three strategies were proposed to overcome these critical areas in Biology teaching with the help of mobile devices. These strategies were designed to cover different parts of the lesson and, if possible, to be applicable to other grades after some modification and they involved working with Kahoot!, Piccollage and Quizlet applications. The strategies were tested during the school year 2018/2019. Another semi-structured interview was subsequently conducted with the teachers. The teachers consider all the proposed strategies to be beneficial for their teaching, the Kahoot! Application being the one that was most appreciated. However, there have also been concerns about the excessive use of technology in the pupil's life. Teachers' opinions helped to compile a set of recommendations for working with tablets in Biology lessons. The recommendations encourage and promote efficient use of mobile technologies while maintaining contact with nature, e.g. through field-based learning.
