Reproduction strategies of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) of permanent and intermittent streams

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce porovnává taxocenózy jepic 33 druhů ze 17 párů lokalit na území České republiky, v páru je vždy jedna lokalita na toku permanentním a druhá na toku stiženém vysycháním. Data k druhům a lokalitám pochází z databáze SALAMANDER a z projektu BIOSUCHO. Hodnoceno bylo podzimní období po vyschnutí toku a následující jaro. Vysychající toky byly rozděleny do dvou kategorií podle míry vysychání (zranitelné a intermitentní). Hlavním cílem práce bylo posouzení taxocenóz podle vybraných charakteristik vázaných k rozmnožovacím strategiím jepic. Posuzovány byly tyto charakteristiky: voltinismus, flexibilita životního cyklu, maximální velikost těla samice, fekundita, typ ovipozice a míra parthenogeneze.Na intermitentních tocích byl zjištěn výrazně vyšší podíl jedinců s flexibilním životním cyklem; vyšší podíl samic s větší velikostí těla, vyšší podíl jedinců druhů se střední fekunditou (1 501–3 000 vajíček); a navýšení počtu druhů, u nichž byla doložená parthenogeneze s úspěšností ekloze větší než 10 %. Byly zjištěny druhy vyskytující se typicky v permanentních tocích: Baetis alpinus, B. scambus, B. rhodani, Ecdyonurus starmachi, Epeorus assimilis, Rhithrogena iridina, Ephemerella mucronata, E. ignita a Torleya major; pouze ve zranitelných tocích byly nalezeny druhy Siphlonurus armatus, Ecdyonurus cf. austriacus a E. dispar; pouze v intermitentních tocích to byly druhy Metreletus balcanicus, Siphlonurus aestivalis a Cloeon dipterum. Taxocenózy jepic zranitelných toků se taxonomickou i funkční strukturou podobaly spíše tokům permanentním než intermitentním. Součástí práce jsou diagramy životních cyklů pro 33 druhů jepic.a popis experimentu – chovu posledních instarů jepic, Rhithrogena carpatoalpina a Ecdyonurus torrentis, s cílem dochování parthenogenetických vajíček, který však nebyl úspěšný kvůli technickým potížím.

Abstract:

This thesis compares taxocenoses of 33 species of mayflies from 17 pairs of sites in the Czech Republic. Each pair of sites were located on a permanent stream and a stream disturbed by drought. The datasets of species and sites originated from the SALAMANDER database and the BIODROUGHT project. Evaluation was based on the autumn season after a drought and the following spring season. The drying streams were divided into two categories according to the degree of drying (vulnerable and intermittent streams). The main aim of this thesis was to describe the taxocenoses using selected characteristics of reproductive strategy of mayflies (voltinism, life cycle flexibility, maximum female body size, fecundity, type of oviposition, and degree of parthenogenesis). It was found that intermittent streams had a higher proportion of individuals of species with flexible life cycle, larger proportion of females with bigger body size a mean fecundity (1 501-3 000 of eggs), and larger proportion of parthenogenetic species with hatching success above 10 %. The characteristic species in permanent streams were Baetis alpinus, B. scambus, B. rhodani, Ecdyonurus starmachi, Epeorus assimilis, Rhithrogena iridina, Ephemerella mucronata, E. ignita, and Torleya major Species Siphlonurus armatus, Ecdyonurus cf. austriacus, and E. dispar were found exclusively in the vulnerable streams and species Metreletus balcanicus, Siphlonurus aestivalis, and Cloeon dipterum in the intermittent streams. The taxonomic and functional structure of mayflies taxocenoses in vulnerable streams were more similar to that of the permanent streams than to that of the intermittent streams. For 33 species of mayflies diagrams of life cycles were created. An experiment was conducted to rear the last larvae instar of Rhithrogena carpatoalpina and Ecdyonurus torrentis, to obtain parthenogenetic eggs, which was, however, not successful due to technical difficulties.
