Radioulnar Trends in the Hand Morphology

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on radioulnar trends in hand morphology. Morphological and dermatoglyphic differences in the human hand are formed during intrauterine development, where various factors affect the development of the limb. The relationships between dermatoglyphic and morphological gradients were investigated, specifically between the three finger dimensions—total finger length, distal joint length, distal joint width and individual categories of dermatoglyphic patterns, as well as the relationship between these dimensions and the complexity of dermatoglyphic patterns. We also observed whether the radioulnar change in the ratio of individual finger sizes is related to the radioulnar change in the pattern complexity difference. These variables were evaluated in a set of two-dimensional images of the hands of 175 young adults, both men and women. For statistical processing in the RStudio program, the Spearman correlation coefficient was used to quantify the dependences and linear regression to determine the direction of the dependence between the radioulnar gradients and their statistical significance. Only statistically very low or low degrees of Spearman rank correlation between metric and dermatoglyphic features were noted. Only in one case was a slight degree of dependence found when the value of the Spearman correlation coefficient between the length of the 2nd finger of the male left hand and the values of the complexity of dermatoglyphic patterns was 0.33 (n = 69, p = 0.0053). Using linear regression, it was found that in all but one case, the ratio of the individual finger sizes and the difference in pattern complexity were not statistically significant. Overall, the results show that the relationships between the dimensions of fingers and the dermatoglyphic features (patterns) are correlated only to a very low extent, except in one case, and are not statistically significantly related.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje radioulnárním trendům v morfologii ruky. Morfologické a dermatoglyfické rozdíly ruky člověka se formují již během nitroděložního vývoje, kde na vývoj končetiny působí různé faktory. Zjišťovali jsme závislosti mezi dermatoglyfickými a morfologickými gradienty, konkrétně mezi třemi rozměry prstů – celková délka prstu, délka distálního článku, šířka distálního článku a jednotlivými kategoriemi dermatoglyfických vzorů, jakož i závislost mezi těmito rozměry a složitostí dermatoglyfických vzorů. Dále jsme sledovali, zda radioulnární změna v poměru jednotlivých rozměrů prstů souvisí s radioulnární změnou v rozdílu složitosti vzoru. Tyto proměnné byly hodnoceny na sadě dvourozměrných snímků rukou 175 mladých dospělých lidí, mužů i žen. Ke statistickému zpracování v programu RStudio jsme použili Spearmanův korelační koeficient pro kvantifikaci závislostí a lineární regresi pro zjištění směru závislosti mezi radioulnárními gradienty a jejich statistickou významnost. Byly zaznamenány jen statisticky velmi nízké nebo nízké stupně Spearmanovy pořadové korelace mezi metrickými a dermatoglyfickými znaky. Jen v jednom případě byl zjištěn mírný stupeň závislosti, kdy hodnota Spearmanova korelačního koeficientu mezi délkou 2. prstu levé ruky mužů a hodnotami složitosti dermatoglyfických vzorů činila 0.33 (n = 69, p = 0.0053). Pomocí lineární regrese bylo zjištěno, že ve všech případech kromě jednoho spolu proměnné poměr jednotlivých rozměrů prstů a rozdíl složitosti vzorů nesouvisel statisticky významně. Celkově z výsledků vyplývá, že vztahy námi použitých rozměrů prstů a dermatoglyfických znaků (vzorů) jsou korelovány jen do velmi nízké míry, kromě jednoho zmíněného případu a statisticky spolu významně nesouvisí.
