Formality and Politeness in Formal Correspondence of the President of the Czech Republic: Congratulation and Condolence Letters

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je poskytnout základní znalosti formálního stylu a zdvořilosti na základě autentických materiálů formální korespondence prezidenta České Republiky, dále pak osobních komentářů a subjektivního zhodnocení. Tato diplomová práce se skládá ze dvou hlavních částí: teoretické a praktické. První část zkoumá nejvýznamnější teoretické přístupy formálnosti a zdvořilosti. Druhá část diplomové práce se týká struktury a obsahu dopisů. Dále tato část analyzuje úryvky z blahopřání a kondolencí. Primárně důraz je kladen na to, jak je formálnost a zdvořilost aplikována, na stupeň formálnosti a zdvořilosti, rozvržení těchto dvou forem dopisů – blahopřání a kondolence při nejrůznějších příležitostech, dále čím je hlavní obsah dopisu obklopen, jaké druhy výrazů jsou v nic použity, a které formulace se opakují v obou typech.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to supply basic rules of formal style and politeness on the basis of authentic materials of formal correspondence of the President of the Czech Republic, personal comments and subjective evaluations. This diploma thesis consists of two main parts: theoretical and practical. The first part examines the most important theoretical approaches to both formality and politeness. The second part of the diploma thesis deals with the structure and content of the letters. In addition, this part analyses fragmentary draft of letters concerning congratulations and condolences. It focuses primarily on how formality and politeness is applied, the degree of formality and politeness, the layout of two forms of letters – congratulations and condolences on various occasions, how the main message of letters is surrounded, what kinds of expressions are used in them, and which formulations repeat in both types.
