Biodegradation of polyethylene with prooxidants

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo sledovat průběh abiotické oxidace a biodegradace polyethylenu s prooxidanty v prostředí půdy a vyzrálého kompostu. Biodegradace byla sledována stanovením plynných produktů procesu metodou plynové chromatografie. V rámci diplomové práce byly testovány tři typy LDPE fólií s prooxidanty. První sadu vzorků tvořily LDPE-1 fólie s prooxidanty na bázi manganu a s obsahem 15 % vápence jako plniva. Vzorky byly nejprve podrobeny urychlenému stárnutí pomocí termooxidace při 70°C po dobu 40 a 80 dní. Po 432 denní biodegradaci v půdním prostředí bylo dosaženo 11,11 % mineralizace u vzorku LDPE-1(40) a 13,98 % u LDPE-1(80). V případě kompostovacích podmínek bylo za 432 dní dosaženo 18,23 % mineralizace u LDPE-1(40) a 18,31 % u LDPE-1(80). Vzorky byly po biodegradaci podrobeny optické a elektronové mikroskopii. Mikroskopické techniky prokázaly přítomnost mikroorganismů na povrchu zkoumaných materiálů. Druhou sadu vzorků tvořily LDPE-2, LDPE-3 fólie o neznámém složení prooxidantů. Vzorky byly nejprve podrobeny urychlenému stárnutí pomocí termooxidace při 70°C po dobu 40 dní. Po 183 denní biodegradaci v půdním prostředí bylo dosaženo 4,34 % mineralizace u vzorku LDPE-2(40) a 5,14 % u LDPE-3(40). V případě kompostovacích podmínek bylo za 92 dní dosaženo 12,28 % mineralizace u LDPE-2(40) a 10,39 % u LDPE-3(40).

Abstract:

The main goal of the diploma thesis was to monitor processes of abiotic oxidation and biodegradation of polyethylene containing prooxidants in soil and mature compost environments. Biodegradation was followed by gas chromatography determination of gaseous products. Three types of LDPE films containing prooxidants were investigated. The first set of samples consisted of LDPE-1 films with manganese based prooxidants and with 15 % of calcite as filler. The samples were first subjected to accelerated aging by thermooxidation for 40 and 80 days at 70°C. After 432 days of biodegradation the values of mineralization were about 11,11 % for sample LDPE-1(40) and about 13,98 % for LDPE-1(80) in the soil test and about 18,23 % for sample LDPE-1(40) and 12,31 % for LDPE-1(80) in the compost test. The samples were monitored by optical and electron microscopy after biodegradation. The employed techniques proved the presence of microorganisms on the surface of the materials. The second set of samples included LDPE-2, LDPE-3 films containing prooxidants with unknown composition. The samples were first subjected to accelerated aging by thermooxidation for 40 days at 70°C. After 183 days of biodegradation the values of mineralization were about 4,34 % for LDPE-2(40) and about 5,14 % for LDPE-3(40) in the soil test. After 92 days of biodegradation the values of mineralization were about 12,28 % for LDPE-2(40) and about 10,39 % for LDPE-3(40) in the compost test.
