Hoax as a specific type of media disinformation

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the spreading of spam and hoaxes as specific types of so called unsolicited emails. The theoretical part consists of a definition of these terms and analysis of their effects. The practical part refers only to hoaxes. In this part questions like what kind of a medium a hoax is and how it uses stratagems to succeed are answered. The thesis also deals with the question why internet users are easily willing to trust unsolicited information and what preventative and repressive measures can be taken and how media literacy can be improved. To answer these questions the following texts were used: Evil Media by Fuller and Goffey, study of Zuzana Kobíkova Zlá Média: Zaostřeno na záludné konstrukce reality v masmediálním prostředí a v síti programovaných médií, scholarly texts from the new media sphere such as: New media: a critical introduction by Martin Lister, Tony Feldman's An Introduction to Digital Media and The Language of New Media by Lev Manovich. I also work with literature by Denis McQuail Mass communication theory: an introduction, Marshall McLuhan Essential McLuhan and Douglas Rushkoff Program or be programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age. The goal of this paper is to reveal function of stratagems in the gray zone which refers to the easy manipulatablity of the internet user and the finding of a possible solution of this problem through the study of scholarly texts that lead to an analysis of the concrete characteristics of a hoax.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá problémom šírenia spamu a hoaxov, špecifických typov tzv. nevyžiadaných emailov. V teoretickej časti práce sa venujem bližšiemu objasneniu týchto pojmov a analýze modelov ich pôsobenia. Praktická časť práce je zameraná len na hoax a hľadá odpovede na otázky, za aké médium môžeme hoax považovať a akým spôsobom toto médium využíva stratagemata k dosiahnutiu svojho cieľa. Tiež si kladiem otázku, prečo je užívateľ internetu ľahko náchylný uveriť doručenej, ale nevyžiadanej informácii, aké sú preventívne i represívne opatrenia a ako by sa dala zlepšiť mediálna gramotnosť spoločnosti. Pri hľadaní odpovedí vychádzam z textov Evil media od autorov Fullera a Goffeyho, štúdie Zuzany Kobíkovej Zlá média: Zaostřeno na záludné konstrukce reality v masmediálním prostředí a v síti programovaných médií, ďalej odborných textov z oblasti teórie nových médií New media: a critical introduction Martina Listra, An Introduction to Digital Media od Tonyho Feldmana a The Language of New Media Leva Manovicha. V práci využívam tiež literatúru od Denisa McQuaila Úvod do teorie masové komunikace, Marshalla McLuhana Člověk, médiá a elektronická kultura a Douglasa Rushkoffa Program or be programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age. Cieľom práce je metódou štúdie odborných textov a analýzy konkrétnych vlastností hoaxu objasniť fungovanie stratagemat v šedej zóne, poukázať na jednoduchosť manipulácie užívateľa internetu a pokúsiť sa nájsť možné riešenie tejto problematiky.
