V Česku, i ve světě, mají malá města nezastupitelnou roli v sídelním systému, přesto se většina výzkumů v minulosti věnovala spíše studiu velkých měst. V posledních dekádách jsme svědky smršťování velkých, ale i malých měst důsledkem deindustrializace a demografických změn. In the Czechia, and in the world, small towns have an irreplaceable role in the settlement system, yet most research in the past focused on the study of large cities. In recent decades, we have witnessed shrinkage of both large and small cities as a result of de-industrialization and demographic change.
