Logging and Monitoring for Kubernetes Infrastructure

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na návrh a implementaci centralizovaného řešení logování a monitorování Kubernetes infrastruktury v centru CERIT-SC. Řešení se skládá z vhodně zvoleného a nakonfigurovaného softwaru, který dobře funguje v infrastruktuře CERIT-SC. Instalace řešení je vhodně automatizovaná skrze využití existující infrastruktury uvnitř CERIT-SC. Tato práce také popisuje, jak jsou data, získaná skrze logovací a monitorovací řešení, využita v systému, který upozorňuje systémové administrátory na problémy v infrastruktuře. Vzniklá architektura se skládá z několika Prometheus serverů, které posílají metriky do jednoho centrálního Prometheus serveru, z několika Promtail instancí, které posílají logy do centrálního Loki serveru, a z instance Grafany, která uživatelům zpřístupňuje data z centrálního Promethea a Lokiho. Zvolený systém pro upozorňování je Zabbix, který komunikuje s centrálním Prometheem, aby získal data, podle kterých rozhoduje, zda vznikl problém a systémoví administrátoři by měli být upozorněni.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to design and implement a centralized solution for logging and monitoring of Kubernetes infrastructure in the CERIT-SC center. The solution consists of appropriately selected and configured existing software that works well inside the CERIT-SC infrastructure. The installation of the solution is reasonably automated through the usage of existing infrastructure at CERIT-SC. This thesis also describes how data gathered by the logging and monitoring solution is used in an alerting system to notify system administrators in case of infrastructure problems. The resulting architecture consists of multiple Prometheus servers collecting metrics into a single central Prometheus, multiple Promtail instances sending log lines to a central Loki server, and a Grafana instance through which a user can access data from the central Prometheus and Loki. The chosen alerting system is Zabbix, which communicates with the central Prometheus to get data based on which it decides if there is a problem the system administrators should be notified about.
