The History of Information Science in the USA during the period of years 1950 - 1990

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce „Historie informační vědy v USA v letech 1950 - 1990“ pojednává o vývoji informační vědy v USA v druhé polovině 20. století. V úvodu se zaměřuje na vymezení předmětu informační vědy, nastínění jejího vývoje a také představí pět významných vizionářů. Chronologicky popisuje hlavní témata jednotlivých dekád. 50. léta se soustředí na nekonvenční informační systémy a přiblížují spor informační věda versus knihovní věda. V 60. letech jsou nastíněny průmyslové kořeny informační vědy, prvotní online systémy, interakce člověka a stroje (HCI) a počátky dějin sítí. Obdobi 70. let se zabývá online vyhledáváním, představuje jeho významné představitele a pokračuje plánováním a vývojem sítí. 80. léta jsou věnována dalšímu rozvoji online aktivit a sítí. V jejich závěru je popsán rozvoj Internetu. V přílohách je ke každému desetiletí uveden přehled nejdůležitějších událostí.

Abstract:

The bachelor’s diploma paper entitled „The History of Information Science in the USA during the period of years 1950 - 1990“ deals with the development of information science in the USA throughout the second half of the 20th century. The introduction of the paper focuses on the definition of subject of information science, outlines its development, and introduces five distinguished visionaries of it. The diploma paper describes the main topics of individual decades chronologically. The fifties concentrate on unconventional information systems and clarify the difference between information and library science. The sixties, however, outline industrial roots of information science, initial online systems, human-computer interaction (HCI) and the beginning of history of networks. The decade of the seventies covers the online search, introduces its outstanding representatives and deals with planning and development of networks. The eighties clarify further development of online activities as well as networks. The conclusion is devoted to the development of the Internet, while annexes present summary of significant events and inventions by decades noted above.
