Help That Does Not Heal: Alcoholism in Sherman Alexie`s Reservation Blues and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven

Anotace:

Cílem práce je analýza dvou literárních děl Shermana Alexieho, konkrétně románu Reservation Blues a sbírky povídek The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, ve spojitosti s tématem alkoholismu mezi americkými indiány dvacátého století. Alexie, který se narodil v indiánské rezervaci kmene Spokane, zobrazuje ve svých dílech životy amerických indiánů žijících v této oblasti. Práce na analýze literárních postav ukazuje, že velký počet amerických indiánů, kteří se snaží vyrovnat se se svými zoufalými životy, nachází útěchu v alkoholu. Tato medikace často zhoršuje problémy postav i jejich následky a poznamenává protagonisty ještě hlouběji. Alkohol některé postavy zabíjí a někteří protagonisté pijí dobrovolně za účelem smrti. Ačkoliv někteří těžcí pijáci v Alexieho dílech jsou si vědomi faktu, že alkohol není správný způsob, jak si léčit své zraněné já a snaží se vyvarovat se dalším problémům s alkoholem, většina protagonistů nemá potřebnou sílu odolat pití a jejich problémy se díky nadměrnému příjmu alkoholu stávají važnějšími.

Abstract:

The primary aim of this thesis is to analyse Sherman Alexie’s novel Reservation Blues and his short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven in relation to the theme of alcoholism among Native Americans in the twentieth century. Alexie who was born on the Spokane Indian Reservation depicts the lives of Native American people living in the area in his works. The thesis shows on an analysis of Alexie’s characters that a great number of Native Americans who try to deal with their desperate lives find solace in alcohol. Alcohol use fills the role of medication for its users. However, what can be seen is that such medication often makes the characters’ problems, their consequences and the people’s later “wounds,” deeper. Alcohol actually kills some of the protagonists while some of them drink with the idea of killing themselves rather than continue living in the poor conditions and leading miserable lives. Although some heavy drinkers in Alexie’s work know that alcohol is not the right means to heal one’s wounded self and they try to eschew further alcohol problems, most protagonists do not have the strength to resist drinking, and heavy intake of alcohol only makes their problems more serious than they would be without drinking.
