Chapters on the History of the Catholic Church Administration in Moravia in the Hussite Period (1408-1457)

Abstract:

Autor se zaměřuje na některé aspekty církevní správy olomoucké diecéze v době husitské – od počátku pronikání husitských myšlenek na Moravu až do nástupu Jiřího z Poděbrad na český trůn. V prvním oddílu se autor v první kapitole pokouší nově vylíčit průběh sporu o olomoucké biskupství v letech 1416-1420 a jeho význam pro rozšíření husitství na Moravu, ve druhé kapitole pak přináší prosopografii centrálních zástupných úředníků biskupa – generálních vikářů a oficiálů biskupské kurie v období 1408-1457. Rozsáhlejší druhý oddíl je věnován farní organizaci. V první kapitole autor sleduje pronikání husitství do moravské farní sítě v předvečer husitské revoluce a pokouší se blíže objasnit průběh tzv. bojů o fary. Obsáhlá druhá kapitola je věnována rozkladu katolické církevní organizace během husitské revoluce. V poslední kapitole se autor věnuje době po ukončení husitských válek a přijetí kompaktát. Autor analyzuje dva dosud nevyužité prameny – korespondenci moravského pána Jana Tovačovského z Cimburka s olomouckou kapitulou ve věci utrakvistické farní správy ve městě Hranice a zlomek konfirmační knihy olomoucké diecéze z let 1452-1455. Disertační práce doplňuje v řadě ohledů dosavadní poznání církevní správy olomoucké diecéze a vůbec života katolické církve na Moravě v husitské době. Ukazuje na sílu zaběhlých stereotypů ve správě pozdně středověké církve, neschopnost reagovat na změněné poměry a především malou ochotu respektovat legalizaci utrakvismu basilejskými kompaktáty, kde olomoučtí biskupové v podstatě sledovali nechuť papežů ke kompaktátům.

Abstract:

The author deals with some aspects of the church administration of the Olomouc diocese in the Hussite period – from the beginnings of Hussite ideas penetration to Moravia until George of Podebrady ascended the throne. In the first chapter of the first part the author attempts to present in a new way the course of the struggle for the Olomouc bishopric in 1416-1420 and its impact on the dissemination of Hussitism in Moravia. The second chapter refers to the prosopography of the central deputies of the bishop – the vicars general and judicial vicars of the bishop‘s curia in 1408-1457. The more extensive second part deals with the parish organisation. In the first chapter the author concentrates on the penetration of Hussitism into the Moravian parish network on the eve of the Hussite revolution and attempts to explain the course of the so-called struggle for parishes. The large second chapter focuses on the decline of the Catholic church organisation during the Hussite wars. The last chapter refers to the period after the end of the Hussite wars and the acceptance of the Compactata: The author analyses two so far unexploited sources – the correspondence of Jan Tovačovský of Cimburk, a Moravian nobleman, with the Olomouc chapter regarding the Utraquist parish administration in the town Hranice, and a fraction of a liber confirmationum (book of benefices) of the Olomouc diocese in 1452-1455. The doctoral thesis enhances the existing knowledge of the church administration of the Olomouc diocese as well as of the life of the Catholic church in Moravia during the Hussite period. It shows a power of traditional stereotypes within late medieval church administration, an inability to react to changing circumstances, and particularly a limited willingness to respect the legalisation of the Utraquism by the Compactata of Basel, in which regard the bishops of Olomouc, in effect, adopted papal opposition to the Compacata.
