Dog in anthropological context in Roman Period

Abstract:

In this thesis we will describe the position of the dog in the Roman period in the Central Europe, its appearance, role and its similarity to today's breeds and we will try to observe the occurrence or the degree of breeding of these individuals. From the literature research we will learn about the Roman era, about the aspects of the life of the Romans and the funerary and burial grounds in our territory. We will describe the religious believes and rituals of the inhabitants, the division of rituals and the role of the dog in the ritual life of the inhabitants. We will also look into the use of dogs in the Roman era, the types of dogs occurring in the Roman era and the relationship with them mentioned in the historical written sources. Using osteological and osteometric methods, we analyze the material we examine from the historical sites of Nitra, Chotín, Čalovo-Veľký Meder, Beckov-Tesco Store, Branč, Bratislava-Trnávka, Bořetice Pasohlávky (2009, 2008, 2006), Jevišovka, Traismauer, Bruckneudorf and Nickelsdorf. This data and the subsequent comparison with data from Tác-Gorsium will help us to create a picture of the wider inclusion of the population of dogs we study. Comparison with the data obtained from the comparative collection of dog skulls from the Museum of Natural History in Vienna and data on today's breeds will allow us to assign a dog to a particular type of dog and thereby estimate its potential role and its relationship with man in Roman times at the sites we have processed.

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci si přiblížíme postavení psa v době římské na území střední Evropy, jeho vzhled, úlohu a jeho podobnost k dnešním plemenům a budeme se snažit pozorovat výskyt, popřípadě míru procesu šlechtění těchto jedinců. Z literární rešerše se dozvíme informace o době římské, o aspektech života obyvatel a také o pohřebním ritu a pohřebištích na našem území. Přiblížíme si náboženské představy a rituály obyvatelů, rozdělení rituálů a také samotnou úlohu psa v rituálním životě obyvatel. Probereme si taktéž využití psů v době římské, typy psů vyskytujících se v době římské a vztah k nim vzpomínaný v historických písemných pramenech. Pomocí osteologických a osteometric-kých metod zanalyzujeme námi zkoumaný materiál z historických lokalit Nitra, Chotín, Čalovo-Veľký Meder, Beckov-Tesco Store, Branč, Bratislava-Trnávka, Bořetice, Paso-hlávky (2009, 2008, 2006), Jevišovka, Traismauer, Bruckneudorf a Nickelsdorf. Psy z tychto lokalit a následná komparace s údaji z lokality Tác-Gorsium nám pomůže vytvo-řit si obraz o širším zařazení populace námi zkoumaných psů. Komparace s údaji získa-nými z komparativní sbírky psích lebek z Přírodovědného muzea ve Vídni a záznamy o dnešních plemenech umožní zařadit jedince do určitého typu psa a tím si i dovolit jeho potenciální úlohu a vztah člověka k němu v době římské na námi zpracovaných lokali-tách.
