Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá příčinným vztahem mezi jazykem a mnohočetnými identitami hlavních protagonistů - polyglotů ve vybraných knihách Briana Castra – Birds of Passage, Shanghai Dancing a The Garden Book. Práce dokazuje, že Castro používá jazyk jako prostředek zodpovědný za konstrukci mnohočetných identit jeho hlavních postav. Navíc jím zobrazený vztah mezi jazykem a identitou odpovídá výsledkům současných vědeckých studií. Spojitost mezi Castrovým zobrazením a teoretickým výzkumem je důležitá, neboť tak odhaluje potenciální využití jeho knih v komunitě polyglotů.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the relationship between language and multiple identities in Brian Castroʼs novels Birds of Passage, Shanghai Dancing and The Garden Book. It shows that language is responsible for constructing the multitude of identities, a typical feature of Castroʼs multicultural characters. Moreover, the depiction of the language-identity relation in the novels complies with recent social scientific findings. This connection between research and Castroʼs fiction is of importance because it suggests much broader impact of the writing on the multilingual community.
