Abstract:

Bakalářská práce na téma „Uprchlí otroci a jejich příspěvek k hnutí abolicionistů“ pojednává o situaci ve Spojených Státech Amerických v devatenáctém století, která byla značně ovlivněna otroctvím a jeho expanzí na Západ. Mým cílem bylo shrnout fakta o historických událostech, které byly s otroctvím spojeny, a zjistit, které faktory ovlivnily pohled na tuto instituci. Především jsem se zaměřila na uprchlé otroky, kteří představovali významný přínos k vzniku a strategii hnutí abolicionistů. Jedni by nemohli existovat bez druhých. V první části jsem se pokusila popsat rozdílný vývoj na Jihu a na Severu a charakterizovat otroky, kteří se rozhodly pro svoji svobodu bojovat. Druhá a třetí kapitola pak vysvětluje historické události, ke kterým přispělo přijetí zákona o uprchlích otrocích, který byl součástí Kompromisu z roku 1850. Podle mého názoru právě tento dokument nesmírně ovlivnil přístup obyvatelů Severu k otroctví a řady abolicionistů se následně rozšířily. Díky tomuto dokumentu byli abolicionisté více než kdy jindy odhodláni pro zrušení otroctví. I kdyby to mělo znamenat rozdělení Severu a Jihu nebo vést k občanské válce.

Abstract:

The theses ″Fugitive Slaves and their Contribution to the Abolitionist Movements″ deals with the situation in the United States of America in the nineteenth century which was greatly influenced by the slavery and its expansion westwards. My goal was to put together the facts about the historical events of this period connected with slavery and to find out the factors which had an impact on the change of the point of view on this institution. I mainly focused on the fugitive slaves who represented a significant contribution to the origin and strategy of the abolitionist movements. One group would not exist without the other. First of all, I tried to depict the differencies between the development in the South and in the North and to characterize the slaves who decided to struggle for their freedom. The second and the third chapter than describes the effects of issuing the Fugitive Slave Act which was a part of the Compromise of 1850. In my opinion, this particular bill largely affected the opinions of the Northerners about slavery and extended the ranks of abolitionists. Due to this act the abolitionists were more than ever determined to abolish the slavery.. Even if it should lead to a separation of the South and North or to a civil war.
