Translation of Non-Standard Varieties in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat způsoby, jakými lze v překladu reflektovat přítomnost dialektu v původním jazyce. Text se nejprve věnuje sociolingvistickým a dialektologickým pojmům, které jsou třeba k porozumění následující analýzy. Stejně tak nabízí i přehled možných strategií, které lze při překladu dialektů využít. Primárním textem, který je předmětem analýzy, je román Outlander (Gabaldon 2001) a jeho překlad, který v češtině vyšel pod názvem Cizinka (Fulková 2016). Jelikož se děj románu odehrává převážně ve Skotsku, obsahuje množství postav, které hovoří skotským dialektem. Ten však v románu neslouží pouze k místní charakterizaci postav, funguje zároveň jako indikátor jejich sociálního postavení a míry vzdělání. Díky tomuto sociálnímu aspektu jeho využití by bylo možné jej v překladu zohlednit pomocí prostředků hovorové a zejména obecné češtiny, která má podobnou funkci. Analýza překladu románu však ukázala, že překladatelka těchto prostředků využívá jen minimálně, a tak je výsledkem text, který neodráží ani místní, ani sociální příslušnost jednotlivých postav. Pro porovnání tato práce zohlednila ještě překlad stejnojmenného seriálu, který je adaptací Cizinky. Zde překladatel zaujal jiný postoj a využil hovorové a obecné češtiny k tomu, aby postavy mezi sebou odlišil v závislosti na jejich společenském postavení v souladu s původním jazykovým materiálem. Tento proces se autorce této práce jeví jako vhodnější, jelikož zachovává alespoň sociální aspekt v dialektu obsažený.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to explore the different ways in which non-standard language varieties can be reflected in translation. It demonstrates that the use of a non-standard variety in a fictional text can serve many non-negligible functions and can be a powerful means to situate individual characters spatially, socially, and even temporally. This text offers a review of the strategies which can be adopted to translate dialects and uses it as a theoretical basis for the analysis of Outlander (Gabaldon 2001) and its translation into Czech titled Cizinka (Fulková 2016). This primary source text is then analysed in the context of Berezowski’s (1997) division of dialect markers whilst using the translation of the novel’s audio-visual adaptation—the TV series Outlander (2014), or Cizinka (Hoffman 2014)—for comparison. The analysis shows that the source text is rich in dialect markers on all linguistic levels and that the frequency with which they are employed is often dependant on the social status of the speaker and on the level of their education. Therefore, it is argued that the social aspect of the non-standard variety is given more significance than its function as a means of geographically situating the characters. Fulková’s translation, however, scarcely reflects the dialect markers present in the source-language text. The translator of the TV series was more perceptive of the social variation, and frequently translated the source-language non-standard variety with a target-text colloquial non-standard variety. This thesis finds the strategy of colloqualisation to be appropriate for the text in question. The regional aspect of the dialect is diminished in this strategy but at least the social variation can thus be maintained.
