Modality as a grammatical and semantic category of the English verb

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zabývat se modálním systémem anglického a českého jazyka a zjistit, do jaké míry se tyto systémy u takto dvou typologicky rozdílných jazyků liší, či shodují. Teoretická část popisuje modalitu jakožto funkčně-sémantickou kategorii a následně se zaměřuje na klasifikaci jednotlivých typů modality a vyjadřovací prostředky s nimi spojené, přičemž pozornost je kladena zejména na anglická modální slovesa. Praktická část poskytuje excerpta z originální anglické literatury a srovnává je s jejich ekvivalenty v českém překladu.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to deal with the modal system of the English and the Czech language and to find out to what extent these systems of such two typologically different languages differ or match. The theoretical part describes the basic notion of modality and then focuses on the classification of the individual types of modality and the modal expressions associated with them, whereas the attention is paid mainly to the English modal verbs. The practical part provides excerpts from the original English literature and compares them with their equivalents in the Czech translation.
