Idioms in Friedrich Schiller's Intrigue and Love and its Czech Translation

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines the phrasal idioms in Friedrich Schiller's play Kabale und Liebe (Intrigue and Love) (1784) and their translation solutions in Josef Balvín's translation Úklady a láska (1981). The theoretical part explains the terms 'phraseology' and 'phrasal idiom' and describes the characteristics and the classification of phrasal idioms. Furthermore, the theory of translation criticism of dramatic texts and the confrontational phraseology are described. It also briefly discusses the literary period of 'Sturm und Drang', in which the play was written and the author. The practical part is focused on the analysis of individual phrasal idioms and their translation, including a possible proposal for another translation solution.

Abstract:

Diese Bachelorarbeit untersucht die Phraseologismen im Friedrich Schillers Theaterspiel Kabale und Liebe (1784) und ihre Übersetzungslösungen in der Übersetzung Úklady a láska (1981) von Josef Balvín. Im theoretischen Teil werden Begriffe 'Phraseologie' und 'Phraseologismus' erklärt und die Charakteristik sowie die Klassifikation der Phraseologismen beschrieben. Weiter werden die Übersetzungskritik der Bühnentexte sowie die konfrontative Phraseologie behandelt. Kurz widme ich mich auch der literarischen Epoche 'Sturm und Drang', in der das Werk entstanden ist, und dem Autor. Der praktische Teil besteht in der Analyse der einzelnen Phraseologismen und deren Übersetzung, einschließlich eines eventuellen Vorschlags für eine andere Übersetzungslösung.
