Analyzing Cooperation in Organizations through the Agent-Based Modeling Approach

Anotácia:

Spontánní vznik kooperace a její udržení v populaci samostatných, nepříbuzných a egoistických agentů je jedno z významných témat teorie komplexních systémů, která je interdisciplinární svou povahou, i aplikací napříč spektrem vědních disciplín. Výchozím přístupem pro analýzu spolupráce je teorie her, konkrétně pak model Vězňova dilematu. Nové možnosti uplatnění tohoto modelu vznikly zejména s dostupností počítačů a možností aplikovat dilema v počítačových simulacích. V uplynulých dekádách byl původní koncept Vězňova dilematu opakovaně rozšiřován, čímž byly objevovány nové mechanismy, kterými je spolupráce podporována. Významným milníkem bylo též rozšíření teorie komplexních sítí, které umožnilo provádět simulace na reálných interakčních topologiích. Tato práce shrnuje problematiku modelování spolupráce skrze Vězňovo dilema, dále seznamuje s některými principy komplexních systémů a blíže popisuje běžně užívané modely komplexních sítí. Dále práce poskytuje přehled stávajícího výzkumu orientovaného na rozšíření Vězňova dilematu a ilustruje absenci studií se zaměřením prostředí organizací. V praktické části je popsán model MOSES – multiparametrový model na bázi agentů, který rozšiřuje původní koncept Vězňova dilematu do firemního prostředí. MOSES byl navržen, implementován a testován v laboratoři Sociální informatiky a dialogových systémů FI MUNI. Provedené experimenty byly zaměřeny na analýzu dopadu jednotlivých funkcionalit modelu na klíčové výstupní proměnné. Analýzou výsledků byly identifikovány mikromechanismy, kterými lze podpořit úroveň spolupráce v organizaci, a tím i celkový výkon organizace a stres zaměstnanců. Mezi významné faktory mající dopad na identifikované mikromechanismy patří: topologie sítě interakcí mezi zaměstnanci; strategie odměňování chování zaměstnanců; a specifické chování zaměstnanců v centrálních pozicích v závislosti na organizační kultuře.

Abstract:

The spontaneous emergence of cooperation and its maintenance among a population of independent, non-kin, and self-interested agents is an important topic in the complex systems theory, which is interdisciplinary by its definition and applications throughout the spectrum of scientific disciplines. An implicit approach for studying cooperation is through the game theory, commonly by the Prisoner’s Dilemma framework. Historically, novel possibilities of applying this framework appeared with the increasing availability of computers which allowed computer simulations to be performed. In the last few decades, Prisoner’s Dilemma’s original concept had been extended repeatedly to discover new micromechanisms that support the emergence of cooperation. In the new millennium, the increasing popularity of complex network analysis allowed us to simulate the Prisoner’s Dilemma on realistic models of human interaction networks. This thesis summarizes the topic of cooperation modeling through the Prisoner’s Dilemma, introduces selected principles of complex systems, and described commonly used models of complex networks in detail. A structured overview of the existing research focused on the Prisoner’s Dilemma’s extensions is also provided. This overview illustrates that none of the published studies were explicitly aimed at modeling cooperation in the organizational context. Hence, the MOSES model has been designed and implemented in the Laboratory of Social Informatics and Dialogue Systems. The MOSES is a multiparameter agent-based model which extends the original Prisoner’s Dilemma framework with mechanisms relevant to the organizational environment. The performed experiments aimed to analyze the impact of individual functionalities implemented in the model on the key outcome variables. Analyses of results identified micromechanisms that may support the level of cooperation in organizations, which affects their overall performance and levels of stress among employees. Some of the factors that significantly impact identified micromechanisms are the topology of employees’ interaction network, employees’ evaluation strategies applied by management, and employees’ cooperative behavior in central network positions.
