The role of a producer in game industry in the Czech Republic, focusing on the development of independent video games

Abstract:

Práce se zaměří na výzkum role producenta ve všech fázích vývoje, výroby a distribuce indie a nezávislých video her. V první části charakterizuje stručnou historii herního průmyslu v ČR, jeho současnou podobu i běžnou workflow vývoje a výroby hry. V druhé části se text zaměří už přímo na roli producenta v jednotlivých fázích a skrze tuto optiku nahlédne na obecné fungování herního průmyslu včetně financování, marketingu, distribuce, festivalů. Text v jistém smyslu naváže na bakalářskou práci Možnosti financování v herním průmyslu v České republice studentky produkce Barbory Ulrychové z roku 2016, která se jako jeden z prvních odborných textů věnovala praktickým aspektům produkce her. Aktualizuji ji o nové možnosti financování z veřejných zdrojů, které za uplynulých 6 let vznikly a téma rozšířím o další aspekty produkční práce. Cílem práce by měla být jasná charakteristika role producenta v českém herním průmyslu v se zaměřením na nezávislé herní vývojáře a „indie“ hry. Výsledný text by tak měl být přínosem pro filmové producenty a studenty produkce, kteří uvažují nad uplatněním v herním průmyslu.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on researching the role of a producer in all stages of development, production and distribution of indie and independent video games. First part characterizes a brief history of the game industry in the Czech Republic, its current form, the common workflow of game development and production. In the second part, the text focuses directly on the role of the producer in each stage of production. It looks at the general functioning of the game industry, including financing, marketing, distribution, festivals. The text will follow on teh 2016 bachelor's thesis "Financing Options in the Game Industry in the Czech Republic" by student Barbora Ulrychová, which was one of the first professional texts focusing on the practical aspects of game production. I will update it with information on new public funding opportunities that have emerged over the past 6 years and expand the topic to include other aspects of production work. The aim of the thesis is to provide a clear characterization of the role of game producers in the Czech republic, with a focus on independent game developers and "indie" games. The resulting text should thus be of benefit to film producers and production students who are considering a career in the games industry.
