Analysis of time series of the sea ice area at the North Pole and South Pole in 1978 - 2012

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou časových řad průměrné měsíční plochy mořského ledu pěti oblastí na jižní polokouli a šesti oblastí na severní polokouli v letech 1978 -- 2012. Analýza se týká i plochy mořského ledu celé oblasti Antarktidy a celé oblasti Arktidy. Časové řady byly získány z vědeckého výzkumného portálu Goddardova kosmického střediska NASA. Cílem této práce je zjistit a vzájemně porovnat vývoj časových řad v jednotlivých oblastech. Pro tuto analýzu použiji základní popisné charakteristiky časových řad a popis jejich trendové a sezónní složky. Dalším cílem je ověřit dvě hypotézy. První hypotéza je, že plocha mořského ledu v celé oblasti Arktidy ubývá. Druhou hypotézou je, že plocha mořského ledu v celé oblasti Antarktidy ubývá. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, do části teoretické a empirické. Teoretická část vytváří teoretický základ, z něhož vychází empirická část věnována analýze vybraných časových řad.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the time series of the sea ice area monthly avarage analysis in five regions in the Southern Hemisphere and in six regions in the Northern Hemisphere in the period 1978 -- 2012. The analysis involves also the sea ice area in the whole Arctica and in the whole Antarctica. The time series were obtained from the Science Research Portal administered by the Goddard Space Flight Center, which comes under NASA. The objective of this thesis is to determine the development of the time series in particular regions and compare them to each other. For this analysis, I am using the basic characteristics of time series and tools for the description of their trend and their seasonal components. Another aim is verification of two following hypotheses. The first hypothesis is that the sea ice area in the whole Arctic region is on the decrease. The second hypothesis is that the sea ice area in the whole Antarctic region is on the decrease. The thesis is divided into two parts, into theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part lays the foundations for the second part, which is practical and refers to the analysis of time series itself.
