The Third Crusade through the Eyes of a Certain Austrian Cleric: So-Called Ansbert and the Idea of a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the Roman-German Empire in the Waning 12th Century

Anotace:

Hlavním předmětem zájmu doktorské disertační práce je dobový narativ popisující křížovou výpravu Fridricha Barbarossy (1188–1190), Historia de expeditione Friderici imperatoris tzv. Ansberta, v kontextu římsko-německé říše závěru 12. století a ideologie křížových výprav. Analýza stavu poznání nejprve ukazuje, že zatímco křižácké hnutí je oblíbeným tématem historiků, ideologická úroveň Barbarossovy kruciáty (součást třetí křížové výpravy) byla výzkumem spíše zanedbána. Tak tomu bylo i v případě Historie de expeditione – snaha identifikovat jejího anonymního autora, tzv. Ansberta, nedala historikům prostor klást otázky samotnému textu, otázky týkající se důvodu jeho vzniku (causa scribendi), funkcí a autorských záměrů. Analýza toho, co mohlo tvořit causu scribendi proto tvoří první část disertace, kde je ukázáno, že důvodem psát a posléze upravovat narativ muselo být vyhlášení kruciáty a poté smrt Barbarossy během ní, než mohla výprava dosáhnout svých cílů. Aby se s touto tragédií narativně vyrovnal a kruciátu i přesto mohl vyzdvihnout, mohl anonymní autor čerpat inspiraci mimo jiné z děl Roberta Mnicha a Oty z Freisingu, a mohl se snažit oslovit komunitu těch, kteří na kruciátu vzpomínali, tzv. Erinnerungsgemeinschaft. Druhá, centrální část disertace analyzuje, které specifické funkce a autorské záměry Historia de expeditione mohla sledovat. Práce ukazuje, že tzv. Ansbert se nejenom snažil formovat paměť na kruciátu a její účastníky a poskytl také mnohé praktické informace pro křižáky budoucí, ale především vykreslil křížovou výpravu pomocí křižácké ideologie, jež se formovala od první kruciáty. Tím, že Barbarossovu kruciátu stylizoval jako součást Boží agendy, jako kajícnou pouť a imitatio Christi, a jako akt tradice, anonymní autor výpravu včlenil do idealizované tradice nastolené první křížovou výpravou, a tak ji obhájil jako i přese všechno přínosnou a spásonosnou. Ještě důležitější bylo, že tzv. Ansbert takto obhájil především císaře Fridricha Barbarossu – ten byl dle něj navzdory své nešťastné a kontroverzní smrti dobrým křižákem hodným spásy již za své skutky během průběhu křížové výpravy. Závěrečná část disertační práce poté analyzuje „druhý život“ Historie de expeditione. Na konci 12. století byl totiž k narativu připojen „Apendix“, jenž přenesl apologii i na rakouské vévody z rodu Babenberků. Historii a její Apendix poté do svého díla včlenil i milevský opat Jarloch, jenž oba texty využil a okomentoval z perspektivy českých zemí a jejich problémů v první čtvrtině století třináctého.

Abstract:

The doctoral thesis deals with a contemporary narrative of Frederick’s Barbarossa crusade to the Holy Land (1188–1190), with the Historia de expeditione Friderici imperatoris by the so-called Ansbert in the context of the late 12th century Roman-German Empire and crusading ideology. The research overview first shows that while crusading itself is a much-researched topic, the ideological level of Barbarossa’s crusade (being a part of the Third Crusade) has been rather neglected. This was the case also with the Historia de expeditione – efforts to identify its anonymous author, the so-called Ansbert, hindered historians from asking questions regarding the text itself, its causa scribendi, functions and authorial intentions. The question of causa scribendi is therefore asked in the first part of the doctoral thesis, where it is shown that the impetus to write and edit the narrative must have been the launch of the crusade and then Frederick Barbarossa’s death on the expedition before it could fulfil its aim. To narratively cope with the failure and eulogise the crusade nevertheless, the anonymous author could have been inspired also by examples of Robert the Monk’s and Otto of Freising’s works, and could have wanted to address with his work a community commemorating the crusade, a crusading Erinnerungsgemeinschaft. The second, central part of the doctoral thesis then analyses which specific functions and authorial intentions the Historia de expeditione seems to have aimed for. It is demonstrated that the so-called Ansbert evidently not only tried to shape remembrance of the crusade and its participants and offer practical information for future crusading expeditions, but above all depicted the crusade using ideology of crusading that had been evolving since the First Crusade. Stylising Barbarossa’s crusade as a part of God’s agenda, as a penitential pilgrimage and an act of imitatio Christi, and as an act of tradition, the anonymous author integrated the crusade into the idealised tradition set by the First Crusade and thus apologised the failed expedition as nevertheless meritorious and salvific. Even more importantly, the so-called Ansbert similarly apologised above all Frederick Barbarossa – despite his unfortunate and controversial death, he was a good crusader worthy of salvation already for his deeds along the way. The last part of the doctoral thesis then analyses the “second life” of the Historia de expeditione. First, at the end of the 12th century, an Appendix was added to the main part of the Historia de expeditione, expanding the apology to Austrian dukes of the House of Babenberg. Then, the abbot Gerlach of Mühlhausen integrated both the Historia de expeditione and the Appendix into his own work, utilising and commenting it from the perspective of the Czech lands and its problems in the first quarter of the 13th century.
