Use of E-business to Gain Companies' Competitive Advantage

Abstract:

Disertační práce s názvem "Využití e-business pro dosažení konkurenční výhody podniků" je zaměřena na aktuální a v odborné literatuře často rozebírané téma využívání informačních a komunikačních technologií (ICT) ve firmách. Práce má ambici přispět do diskuse z několika úhlů pohledu. Text je systematicky rozdělen: Autor nejdříve vymezuje nejširší rámec tématu tím, že zasazuje informační a komunikační technologie do oblasti celospolečenského využití a zaměřuje se na fenomén tzv. informační společnosti. Pak seznamuje čtenáře s různými koncepty, pohledy a hodnotícími modely. Následně je pozornost věnována významu ICT pro národní ekonomiky. Problematika je ilustrována na praktických příkladech a autor pro zpřesnění výkladu používá různých mezinárodních žebříčků a srovnání. Následně se autor soustředí na hlavní subjekty využívající ICT ? domácnosti, vlády a pod-niky. Je systematizován a vyčíslen trh s ICT a představen jeho vývoj v České republice i ve světě. V následující části textu je detailně pojednáno o konkrétním využití ICT v podnikové sféře. Autor srovnává různé přístupy, definuje klíčové pojmy a seznamuje čtenáře s různými modely hodnocení dopadů ICT - zejména pak informačních systémů ? na firemní aktivity. Těžiště zájmu tvoří vliv informačních systémů na konkurenceschopnost firem. Jednotlivé koncepty (tuzemské i zahraniční) jsou přehledně srovnány a autor na základě provedené komparace vyvozuje důsledky pro další práci. Následuje statistický pohled na využití vybraných nástrojů e-business v evropských podnicích. Autor za tímto účelem sestavuje vlastní kompozitní ukazatel a s jeho pomocí provádí mezinárodní komparaci. Po prezentaci výsledků je přistoupeno k hlavní části práce - statistické analýze rozsáhlé báze dat, která pokrývá více než 13.000 firem. Autor zkoumá, jak se liší intenzita využití vybraných nástrojů e-business, intenzita investic do ICT a podíl pracovníků s univerzitním vzděláním a pracovníků ve výzkumu a vývoji mezi firmami, které vykazují rozdílný vývoj v definovaných znacích konkurenceschopnosti. Výsledky přehledně shrnuje, komentuje a diskutuje. Poslední část dokumentu tvoří návrhy na budoucí výzkum a shrnutí přínosů disertační práce (pro rozvoj vědy a oboru, pro praxi a pro pedagogickou činnost).

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis is focused on a current, often discussed topic ? use of infor-mation and communication technologies (ICT) in companies. The author wants to enrich scientific discussion from several points of view. The text is systematically divided: At first, the topical background is set by the anal-ysis of the phenomenon of information society. Then the author presents various ap-proaches and evaluation models focused on this field. Subsequently the focus moves to the impacts of ICT on macroeconomic level. The issues are explained on many practical examples, rankings and international comparisons. Emphasis on use of the ICT on a level of households, governments and enterprises follows. The ICT market is systemized and quantified and its development in the Czech Republic and in the world is presented. In the following part the author in detail compares various approaches to firm use of ICT, defines key terms and presents many models that evaluate the impacts of use of ICT (with special emphasis on information systems) on firms? activities. Particular con-cepts and frameworks are synoptically compared. On this basis the author then formu-lates the scope for the main research. A statistical view on use of selected e-business tools in European companies is a dominant topic of the next part. The author?s new composite indicator is introduced and used for the international comparison. After the evaluation of this particular research the main part of the work follows ? statistical analysis that covers more than 13,000 Euro-pean companies. The author investigates how the intensity of use of particular e-business tools, intensi-ty of investments to ICT and employment of people with university degrees and work-ing in the R&D department differ among the companies with dissimilar competitive characteristics. The results are summarized, commented and discussed. The last part of the document is formed by suggestions for future research, and sum-marization of benefits of the work (for science and scientific field, practice and peda-gogical activities).
