This thesis deals with the phenomenon of skin whitening in the Unites States of America and with ways in which African-Americans were depicted in the skin whitening advertisements. Tato práce pojednává o fenoménu bělení pleti ve Spojených Státech Amerických a o způsobech, jakým byli Afroameričané zobrazováni v reklamách na produkty bělení pleti. Práce obsahuje teoretickou a praktickou část. Teoretická část pojednává o důvodech, které podnítily myšlenku bělení pleti v USA a vývoj reklam od dvacátých do padesátých let dvacátého století.
