Abstract:

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach to learning was adopted in 1994, and it was also defined as teaching methodology which emphasized on adding another language for the learning and teaching of both content and language. This diploma thesis ‘The Implementation of CLIL Approach in a Primary School-Case Study’ is divided into two main parts. In the first part which is the theoretical part, the researcher focused mainly on the overview of the term CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) such as CLIL definition, CLIL components, advantages and disadvantages of CLIL, CLIL methodology and so on. Furthermore, as this thesis focuses on young learners, the description of the characteristic of young learners is provided. Hence, it can help the readers understand and easily learn about the category of learners. In addition, there was a brief description of the education in the Czech Republic and Cambodia to see its differences and similarities. In the second part which is the practical part, the researcher explored the experiences of four primary teachers in implementing CLIL approach in their classrooms. Moreover, the study explored teachers’ perception about their use of this approach in their current classrooms and also their views on the challenges they have encountered. As a result, the research was carried out to help the researcher to find out how CLIL approach which is a new teaching methodology provides benefits to the teachers and students in the classroom as well as to give a good inspiration to teachers who have not known or used such useful approach yet. The study was conducted in one extended primary school located in Brno, the Czech Republic where four primary level teachers of grades 2, 3 and 5 participated.
