Black spirituals and gospels in the Czech culture and their didactic applications

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá českými verzemi černošských spirituálů a gospelů, a to zvláště takovými, jejichž texty vycházejí z textů originálů (je tedy mezi nimi a originály patrná příbuznost, ať už jsou české texty jejich věrným překladem, nebo jsou jimi „pouze“ inspirovány). Cílem práce je porovnat „český“ spirituál a gospel a jejich vývoj v ČSSR v období 1948–1989 s černošským spirituálem a gospelem a jejich vývojem v USA. Podoba „českého“ spirituálu a gospelu pak je popsána na základě analýz vybraných písní. Dalším z cílů práce je rovněž porovnat texty Jiřího Jorana a texty prezentované skupinou Spirituál kvintet spolu s texty vytvořenými evangelickými kněžími. Kromě hledání společných a rozdílných prvků v těchto textech a zkoumání jejich zastoupení ve zpěvnících různého druhu je snahou potvrdit či vyvrátit hypotézu, že v textech evangelických kněží se bude nacházet více explicitních náboženských motivů než v textech skupiny Spirituál kvintet. Práce rovněž popisuje, jak mohou být černošské spirituály a gospely a jejich české verze využity v literární (případně hudební) výchově na středních školách.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the Czech versions of Negro spirituals and gospel songs, particularly on adaptations that draw closely on the original lyrics (and that show, therefore, a clear affinity to the originals, whether the Czech lyrics represent their faithful translation, or they are “merely” inspired by them). The thesis compares “Czech” spiritual and gospel songs and Negro spiritual and gospel songs tracing their evolution in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic between 1948 and 1989 and in the United States respectively and arriving at a description of the genre in the Czech context. Contrasting the lyrics by Jiri Joran, lyrics in the songs performed by Spiritual Kvintet band and the lyrics written by Protestant clergy, the study explores their similarities and differences, their representation in a variety of song book types, and the extent to which they explicitly introduce religious motifs. Finally, the thesis proposes ways Negro spirituals and gospel songs and their Czech versions could be employed in literature and music classes at Czech secondary schools.
