Contrastive analysis of presentations of political parties in the Czech Republic and English-speaking countries

Abstract:

The subject of this diploma thesis is the analysis of web presentations of political parties in the Czech Republic and English-speaking countries. A corpus is composed of texts describing political parties programs, manifestos, and the figure of the party leader. The parties selected for the analysis include Ano political movement, the Czech Civic Democratic Party, the Czech Social Democratic Party, the Labour Party, the Conservative Party, and the Liberal Democratic Party. The theoretical background and the methods used consist of critical discourse analysis and systemic functional linguistics. The analysis examines the ways of constructing identities of the political parties and building relationships with potential voters on the parties' websites, the use of communication strategies as well as grammatical, lexical and stylistic features of the texts. The main focus of the study is on differences between the two cultures in their websites presentations.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na srovnání britského a českého diskurzu ve webových prezentacích politických stran. Korpus se skládá z textů obsahujících programy politických stran, prohlášení a textů pojednávajících o osobnosti lídra strany. Politické strany zvolené k analýze jsou následující: Politické hnutí Ano, Občanská demokratická strana, Česká strana sociálně demokratická, Konzervativní strana, Labouristická strana a Liberální demokraté. Teoretické předpoklady, ze kterých se vycházelo a použité metody, jsou kritická analýza diskurzu a systémová funkční lingvistika. Práce se zaměřuje na způsoby vytváření identity politické strany a formování vztahu s potenciálními voliči na webových stránkách politických stran; dále se věnuje použití komunikačních strategií a v neposlední řadě využití gramatických, lexikálních a stylistických prostředků v textu. Hlavní zaměření je pak na rozdíly politického diskurzu u těchto dvou kultur.
