Mothers Behind Bars

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci jsem se zabývala problematikou uvězněných žen, které jsou zároveň matkami. Z dostupných zdrojů vyplývá, že se příliš výzkumů tomuto tématu v českém kontextu nevěnuje a jedná se tak o výzkumně neprobádané téma. Uvěznění má však výrazný dopad jak na samotné uvězněné matky, tak ale i na jejich děti, a to ve formě negativního narušení vztahů mezi rodičem a dítětem. Na problematiku uvězněných matek nahlížím skrze koncept totálních institucí Ervinga Goffmana a koncept sociálních rolí Talcotta Parsonse. Uvězněné ženy, které jsou zároveň matkami, se během pobytu v totálních institucích (věznicích) dostávají do konfliktu rolí ve chvíli, kdy by měly vykonávat svou roli matky, avšak kvůli uvěznění nemohou. Cílem diplomové práce je popsat, jakým způsobem vnímají uvězněné ženy svou roli matky v prostředí věznic, které velmi výrazným způsobem omezují kontakt matky s dítětem. Cílem diplomové práce je také porozumět, jak se uvězněné ženy vypořádávají s konfliktem sociálních rolí, kdy je na ně kladen společenský tlak "být dobrou matkou", nicméně kvůli uvěznění nemohou svou roli matky dostatečně dobře vykonávat.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I dealt with the issue of incarcerated women who are also mothers. Available sources show that not much research is devoted to this topic in the Czech context and it is thus an unexplored topic. However, incarceration has a significant impact on both the incarcerated mothers themselves and their children, in the form of negative disruption of parent-child relationships. I view the issue of incarcerated mothers through Erving Goffman's concept of total institutions and Talcott Parsons' concept of social roles. Incarcerated women who are also mothers, during their stay in total institutions (prisons), come into role conflict at a time when they should be performing their role as mothers, but cannot because of their incarceration. The aim of this thesis is to describe how incarcerated women perceive their role as mothers in a prison environment that severely limits mother-child contact. The aim of the thesis is also to understand how incarcerated women deal with social role conflict, where social pressure is placed on them to 'be a good mother', yet due to incarceration they cannot perform their role as a mother well enough.
