Sibling relationships in the context of emotional intelligence

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce bylo zaměřit se na problematiku sourozeneckých vztahů, stejně tak jako na téma emoční inteligence. Snažili jsme se zjistit, zda existují rozdíly v kvalitě sourozeneckého vztahu v závislosti na určitých charakteristikách. Konkrétně jsme se zaměřili na kvalitu sourozeneckých vztahů, a to v rámci společného či odlišného místa bydliště a v kontextu vlastních a nevlastních sourozenců. Sourozenecké vztahy jsme sledovali ve třech oblastech: vřelost, konflikt a status/síla. Taktéž nás zajímalo, jestli hraje roli výše emoční inteligence v rámci sourozeneckého pouta a jeho proměnných. Věnovali jsme tedy pozornost emoční inteligenci a jejím genderovým odlišnostem, pořadí narození a počtu sourozenců. Jako cílovou populaci jsme si zvolili adolescenty ve věku od 15 do 20 let, kteří byli studenty středních škol. Celkový počet probandů byl 176, přičemž 110 z nich bylo chlapců a 65 dívek. Sběr dat proběhl metodou tužka-papír a následně byla data přepsána do počítačové podoby. Podle našich výsledků se vlastní a nevlastní sourozenci nelišili v úrovni vřelosti. Naopak, vlastní sourozenci vykazovali častější konflikty a dosahovali vyššího statusu a síly oproti nevlastním sourozencům. Žádné rozdíly ve vřelosti jsme neobjevili ani mezi sourozenci v závislosti na tom, zda spolu bydlí v jedné domácnosti, či nikoliv. Sourozenci sdílející společné bydliště však vykazovali častější výskyt konfliktů a vyšší hodnoty statusu a síly oproti sourozencům žijícím odděleně. Na základě našich zjištění bylo také možné tvrdit, že se nenachází rozdíly ve výši emoční inteligence v závislosti na genderové příslušnosti. Ke stejným zjištěním o neexistenci rozdílů v hodnotách emoční inteligence jsme dospěli i u proměnné pořadí narození a počet sourozenců.

Abstract:

The main goal of this work was to focus on sibling relations as well as on emotional intelligence. We have tried to figure out, whether there are differences in quality of sibling relations depending on certain characteristics. Specifically, we have focused on the quality of sibling relations within the common or different residence and in context of own and half/step siblings. We have studied sibling relations in three areas: warmth, conflict and status/power. We were also interested, if an amount of emotional intelligence within the sibling‘s bond and its variables plays a role. So we payed attention on the emotional intelligence and its gender differences, birth order and number of siblings. We have chosen adolescents at the age from 15 to 20 years, who studied high school, as the target populations. The total number of respondents was 176, including 110 boys and 65 girls. The data collection was done by pencil-paper method and then was transcribed into computer form. According to our results there was no difference in warmth among own and half/step siblings. On the contrary, own siblings showed more frequent conflict and higher level of status and power against half/step siblings. No differences were also found in warmth among siblings depending on whether or not they live together in the same household. Siblings sharing the same place for living reported more frequent conflict and higher level of status and power against siblings living separately. Based on our findings was possible to submit, that there are no differences in the amount of emotional intelligence depending on gender. The same findings about the absence of differences in emotional intelligence values were also reached for the variable birth order and the number of siblings.
