A multidisciplinary approach to the rehabilitation of Amyothrophic Lateral Sclerosis: the patient and his physical therapist.

Abstract:

ALS is a rare disease involving motor neurons that leads to a progressive paralysis of voluntary muscles, associated with atrophy and spasticity. It causes a deep psychological, social and economic impact, because of its slow and incessant evolution towards the progressive disability and eventually death that usually occurs within 3-5 years starting from the onset. During the last years, ALS is more often considered as a multisystem disease and not as a motor system disease according to the classic definition; moreover, the management of the patient involves different professional figures, since he cannot afford to fight against the illness alone.

Abstract:

La SLA ? una patologia rara che colpisce i motoneuroni e che conduce alla progressiva paralisi dei muscoli volontari, accompagnata da atrofia e spasticit?. ? una malattia ad altissimo impatto psicologico, sociale ed economico, considerata la sua lenta ed inesorabile evoluzione verso la progressiva invalidit? ed infine all'exitus, che di solito avviene entro 3-5 anni dall'esordio. Negli ultimi anni, la SLA ? sempre pi? valutata come una malattia multisistemica e non pi? secondo la visione classica di malattia limitata al sistema motorio; inoltre, la gestione del paziente coinvolge diverse figure professionali, poiché chi ne viene colpito non pu? fronteggiare la patologia da solo.
