Ciphers in the service of war

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je seznámit čtenáře s oblastí zabývající se šifrováním a luštěním a ukázat vybrané druhy šifer, které jsou v práci podrobněji popsány, na příkladech. Téma je velice zajímavé, proto věřím, že osoby, které mou práci budou číst, si možná i sami budou chtít přečíst některou knihu ze seznamu použité literatury. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí, kde první kapitola je zaměřena na základní pojmy, rozdělení šifer, vybrané šifry transpoziční a substituční s ukázkami na příkladech a poslední téma je metoda RSA. Druhá kapitola je věnována luštění. Jsou zde popsány různé metody, kterými se kryptoanalytikové snažili luštit zašifrované zprávy, jako například Kasiskiho metoda nebo frekvenční kryptoanalýza. Malá část je také věnována tzv. černým komnatám. Ve třetí kapitole jsou uvedeny některé z šifer, použitých v historických válkách. Protože téma je velmi obsáhlé a nelze zde vtěsnat všechny informace, snažila jsem se vybrat zajímavé šifry a šifry, které v historii sehrály stěžejní roli.

Abstract:

The main aim of this thesis is to acquaint a reader with the area of encryption and decryption. I would like to introduce and explain selected types of ciphers with its detailed examples. The theme is very intriguing. I believe that people who will read the thesis will want to read some books from the list of the literature. Work is divided into three parts, where the first chapter focuses on basic concepts, ciphers? distribution, selected transposition and substitution ciphers with examples and last topic is the method of RSA. The second chapter is devoted to cryptanalysis. There are different methods of encrypted messages solutions described for example Kasiskiho method or frequency cryptanalysis. Small part of the second chapter is devoted to the so-called black chamber. In the third chapter, there are examples of some ciphers, used in historical wars. Because the topic is very comprehensive and cannot cram all informations, I tried to choose interesting ciphers and ciphers, which played an important role in the history.
