Josef Mocker - one of the architects of St. Vitus catedral in Prague

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá neogotickou dostavbou katedrály sv. Víta v Praze, která probíhala pod vedením architekta Josefa Mockera v druhé polovině 19. století. Nejprve je stručně popsána osobnost Josefa Mockera, jeho přístup k památkám a možné dobové vlivy na jeho tvorbu. Následuje stručné vykreslení stavební historie památky- od původní rotundy přes Spytihněvovu baziliku, středověkou katedrálu mistra Matyáše z Arrasu a Petra Parléře, situaci za husitských válek či v době renesance. Samostatná kapitola je pak věnována Mockerově rozsáhlé dostavbě katedrály v duchu neogotiky, která započala r. 1873. Součástí práce je také kapitola, zabývající se souborem fotografií Josefa Sudka, které pocházejí z doby konečných úprav katedrály.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the neo-Gothic completion of the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, which took place under the direction of architect Josef Mocker in the second half of the 19th century. The first part briefly introduces the personality of Josef Mocker, his approach to monuments, and possible contemporary influences on his work. This is followed by a description of the architectural history of the monument, from the original rotunda through Spytihněv's Basilica, the medieval cathedral of Master Matthias of Arras and Peter Parler, to the situation during the Hussite wars or the Renaissance.A separate chapter is then devoted to Mocker's extensive completion of the cathedral in the neo-Gothic style, which began in 1873. Lastly, another chapter of this thesis also deals with a set of photographs by Josef Sudek, which were taken as the final modifications of the cathedral took place.
