Contribution of small states to peacebuilding: The case of Denmark

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je vztah identity malých států a jejich role v oblasti budování míru. Cílem práce je zjistit, jak se odráží sebedefinice na skutečném působení státu v dané oblasti. Hypotézou, z níž práce vychází, je, že malé státy si definováním své identity vytvářejí prostor v mezinárodním prostředí, kde mohou ovlivnit dění, čímž překonávají nedostatek vojenské a ekonomické moci. V první části práce budou definovány pojmy budování míru (peacebuilding), malé státy, identita státu. V druhé části bude analyzována případová studie, která konkrétně ukáže, jak malý stát definuje svou identitu a jak tato identita souvisí s jeho rolí ve zvolené oblasti (analýzou psaných dokumentů), a dále jeho skutečné působení (realizace záměrů). Jako případová studie bylo vybráno Dánsko. Teoretickým východiskem práce je konstruktivistický přístup. Sebedefinice státu bude odvozena prostřednictvím analýzy diskurzu vybraných oficiálních projevů.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the relation between small states’ identity and their role in peace-building. The thesis analyses an impact of self-definition on state’s action. The thesis is based on hypothesis supposing that by state identity creating, a small state is able to find a space of influence in international setting to compensate for the lack of military and economic power. The concepts of peace-building, small states, and state identity are defined in the first part of the thesis. The following part is aimed solely at a case study showing how a small state defines its identity and how the identity is connected to its role in peace-building (through written discourse analysis), and actual realisation. The state of Denmark was chosen as a case study. As for a theory, constructivist approach was chosen as appropriate. The state’s self-definition will be found via discourse analysis of selected papers.
