Influence of Immanuel Kant’s Idea of Perpetual Peace on the Contemporary Liberal Theories of International Relations

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the link between Immanuel Kant’s classical idea of the perpetual peace from his late piece “Towards Perpetual Peace” (1795) and modern liberal theories of international relations. The main aim is to demonstrate, on selected cases, how contemporary liberal theories of international relations intellectually connect to Kant’s philosophy, utilize his perpetual peace thesis as a source of inspiration and reconstruct basic concepts of the perpetual peace. Focus is put on liberal theories based on explanation of empirical phenomena, most importantly peace and conflict in the international environment. Central concern is with the question of how liberal theories reinterpret and reconceptualize three definitive articles of the perpetual peace and the guarantee of the perpetual peace (nature). Lastly, we compare contemporary theoretical models.

Abstract:

Práca pojednáva o ideovom prepojení medzi klasickou myšlienkou večného mieru Immanuela Kanta z jeho neskorého diela „K večnému mieru“ (1795) a modernými liberálnymi teóriami medzinárodných vzťahov. Cieľom práce je demonštrovať na vybraných prípadoch, ako súčasné liberálne teórie na Kantovu filozofiu intelektuálne nadväzujú, čerpajú z jeho tvorby inšpiráciu a často rekonštruujú základné koncepty večného mieru. Práca sa týka explanačne zameraných teórie poskytujúcich výklad empirických javov mieru a konfliktu v medzinárodnom prostredí. Orientujeme sa hlavne na otázku toho, ako súčasné liberálne teórie rekonceptualizujú a reinterpretujú tri definitívne články večného mieru a záruku večného mieru (príroda). Napokon porovnávame súdobé teoretické modely.
