Mass housing estates of the second half of the 20th century in the Czech republic and its garden and landscape context

Abstract:

Disertační práce zpracovává obsáhlé téma hromadných obytných souborů z let 1945–1989 v České republice, dotýká se také evropského kontextu a širších pramenů. Detailně se věnuje zahradně architektonickým a krajinářským aspektům, zabývá se formami volných prostorů v sídlištích, které poukazují na zásadní odlišnosti od předchozích typů obytné i obecně městské výstavby a rozpracovává užité prostředky zahradně architektonické tvorby. Rozdíly mezi urbánní strukturou s tradičními městskými prostory a poválečnými obytnými soubory nejlépe ilustruje typologie obytných souborů podle vztahu zástavby a krajiny, která byla vytvořena na základě vlastních analýz prostorových vlastností sídlišť napříč vývojovými etapami. Těžištěm práce je shrnutí problémů a nezhodnoceného potenciálu v oblasti prostorových, společenských a environmentálních vlastností volných prostorů sídlišť. V závěrečné části je prezentován soubor konkrétní zásad, kterými může do exteriéru hromadných obytných souborů zasáhnout zahradní a krajinářský architekt s cílem odstranění problémů a dosažení svébytného, nezaměnitelného prostředí s pozitivním obrazem místa.

Abstract:

The dissertation addresses the extensive topic of mass housing estates from the years 1945–1989 in the Czech Republic, touching upon the European context and using wider sources. It examines the aspects of garden art and landscape architecture in detail; explores the forms of free spaces in the housing estates which indicate major differences from the previous types of residential as well as generally urban development; and elaborates on the applied means of garden art. The differences between the urban structure of traditional urban spaces and the post-war housing estates are best illustrated by the typology of the housing estates according to the relation between the development and the landscape, which was created based on the author’s own analysis of the spatial characteristics of housing estates across all the evolution stages. The cornerstone of the work is a summary of the issues and the unused potential in the field of spatial, social and environmental characteristics of free spaces of housing estates. The final part presents a list of specific principles by which a garden designer or a landscape architect can intervene in the exterior of mass housing estates in order to remove the problems and achieve a special, unique environment with a positive image.
