Zbrojovka: a black hole in the city center or a unique mosaic of meanings? Urban ethnography of place attachment to the former armament factory in Brno.

Abstract:

Táto magisterská práca je urbánnou etnografiou bývalej zbrojárenskej fabriky Zbrojovka Brno. Z pohľadu teoretickej perspektívy sociálneho konštruktivizmu sa snaží odhaliť spôsoby, akými rozličný aktéri vstupujú do dialektického vzťahu so Zbrojovkou, ako si k Zbrojovke vytvárajú vzťah a čo toto vzájomné spojenie pre nich znamená. Pre účely tejto práce je Zbrojovka chápaná ako trojica reprezentácií miesta: materiálne ako industriálny areál v Brne, sociálne ako špecifická skupina ľudí spojená s miestom a symbolicky ako špecifická značka a symbol. Sociálni aktéri interagujú so Zbrojovkou na všetkých troch úrovniach a pripisujú Zbrojovke v neustálom procese vytvárania a pretvárania významou rozličné a často aj protichodné významy. Tieto významy sú špecifické pre dané miesto a majú potenciál utvárať očakávania aktérov vzhľadom k budúcim interakciám prebiehajúcim na danom mieste. V záverečnej časti práce sú predstavené koncepty interakčnej minulosti a interakčného potenciálu, s pomocou ktorých je popísaný spôsob, akým procesy formovania významov ovplyvňujú vzťah aktérov k miestu a vplývajú tak zároveň na ich sociálne jednanie.

Abstract:

This master thesis is an urban ethnography of the former armament factory Zbrojovka Brno. Through the theoretical perspective of social construction of place attachment it aims to reveal how various actors enter the dialectic relationship with Zbrojovka and what does this connection mean to them. For the purposes of the research Zbrojovka is understood in a triad of its representations: materially as an industrial compound in Brno, socially as a specific community connected to the place and symbolically as a particular brand and a symbol. The actors interact with all three Zbrojovka representations and in a constant process of creation and re-creation of the place they inscribe it with various and often contradictory meanings. It is proposed that these meanings are site specific and have the potential to shape individuals´ future expectations in relation to the place. Therefore, in the final part the concepts of interactional past and interactional potential are introduced in order to suggest how the meaning making processes induce the individuals´ attachment to Zbrojovka and thereby also inform their social actions.
