Neoclassical compounding as an interlingual and intercultural word formation process

Abstract:

The subject matter of the submitted doctoral thesis is the phenomenon of neoclassical compounding as an interlingual and intercultural word formation process as well as an interpretation of the neoclassical constituents ethno-/etno-, euro- and öko-/eco-/eko- in selected substantive confix compounds in modern German, Italian and Czech languages. In this thesis the relevant phenomenon is presented from the perspective of contrastive linguistics in the German-Italian-Czech contexts. The two objectives of the author are determined by the dichotomy "synchrony" and "diachrony" as discussed by the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure. The first theoretically-based objective is to present the phenomenon of neoclassical compounding in a more detailed way, namely: from a historical and language-oriented cultural perspective; from a linguistically- and terminologically-based perspective; from a contrastive, i.e. etymologically-based, perspective of the concept of neoclassicity and hybridity; from a structural perspective relating to immediate constituents. The key points are: reference to the classical languages, i.e. to the Ancient Greek and Latin or "Gräkolatein", "Eurolatein"; terminological disunity - especially the "competition" between the terms neoclassical compounding versus hybrid compounding; terminological adequacy as defined in the so-called "Übereinzelsprachlichkeit" ("translinguality") on the axle classical neoclassical versus hybrid reflecting the specifity of the word formation process. The second analytically oriented goal and, at the same time, the principal aim of the thesis is to describe the morphological-/semantical-/lexical situation of the selected neoclassical constituents within the tree examined languages and to detect relevant developmental tendencies based on the thesis corpus. The author treats the phenomenon with regard to the "nature of language" as defined by Humboldt and with particular reference to his dichotomy Energon-Energeia, i.e. with regard to the language dynamicity. The following methods are used for the purposes of investigation: contrastive method of etymological, morphological and semantical analysis based on the lexicometric analysis of the consulted dictionaries - Duden, Vocabolario Treccani and Slovník spisovného jazyka českého; contrastive method of semantical-lexical paraphrase. The basic hypothesis for the analysis of neoclassical constituents is the hypothesis of Swiss linguist Albert Debrunner about the "Lebensschicksal" (life destiny) of immediate constituents referred to their individual (monolingual) development and about the "Entstehung einer bestimmten semantischen 'Kluft'" (formation of a certain semantical gulf). The results of the analysis show: congruence on the etymological level regarding the so-called "Übereinzelsprachlichkeit"; divergency on a morphological level; divergency on a semantical level (verification of the hypothesis of the Swiss linguist Albert Debrunner); discrepancy between the systems "parole" and "langue", i.e. between "Sprachgebrauch" (speech) and "Sprachfixierung" (language); grade of productivity of constituents; role of linguistic (verbal) creativity (neologisms) and importance of the phenomenon "Weltwissen" (common-sense knowledge) in terms of the word-sense disambiguation of neoclassical constituents. The present thesis is the result of a multidisciplinary approach which includes various linguistic subdisciplines (etymology, semantics, morphology, syntax, lexicology, translatology). It can be considerted as a first step for future contrastive research because the usage of neoclassical formative elements as immediate constituents is increasing. Their translinguistic similarity is often apparent which can lead to misleading semantical conclusions (monolingual semantical interferences). The results of the research could serve lexicographical and translatological purposes with regard to cultural linguistic realities.

Abstract:

Předmětem předkládané dizertační práce je fenomén neoklasické kompozice jako interlingválního a interkulturního slovotvorného procesu a dále interpretace neoklasických konstituentů ethno-/etno-, euro- a öko-/eco-/eko- v substantivních konfixálních kompozitech v současném německém, italském a českém jazyce. Práce popisuje daný jev z hlediska kontrastivní lingvistiky v německo-italsko-českém kontextu a je založena na dvou cílech, které jsou určovány dichotomií diachroniesynchronie ve smyslu de Saussura. Prvním cílem, který je pojatý teoreticky, je představit detailněji neoklasickou kompozici, a to: - z hlediska historického a jazykově kulturního; - z hlediska lingvisticko-terminologického; - z hlediska kontrastivního s ohledem na etymologii v rámci konceptů neoklasicity a hybridity; - z hlediska strukturního s ohledem na povahu bezprostředních konstituentů. Klíčovými body jsou: - reference (vztah) ke klasickým jazykům, tedy staré řečtině a latině, respektive řecko-latině (srov. Dardano 1978, str. 114; von Polenz 1999, str. 397; Volmert 2003, str. 23; Munske 2015, str. 510; Munske 2015b, str. 517); - terminologická nejednotnost na základě "konkurence" dvou kontrastních termínů, a to neoklasická kompozice a hybridní kompozice a - terminologická adekvátnost ve smyslu interlingvality (Übereinzelsprachlichkeit) na ose adjektiv klasický neoklasický versus hybridní, která reflektuje specifičnost slovotvorného jevu. Druhým a také hlavním cílem, který je pojatý analyticky, je popis aktuální morfologicko-sémanticko-lexikální situace vybraných neoklasických konstituentů ve třech zkoumaných jazycích a stanovení relevantních tendencí na základě vlastního dizertačního korpusu. Na jev autor nahlíží z pohledu podstaty jazyka ve smyslu Humboldta (1836, str. 41) a jeho pojmů Energon a Energeia, tedy z pohledu dynamičnosti jazyka. Za účelem výzkumu jsou používány následující metody: - kontrastivní metoda etymologicko-morfologicko-sémantické analýzy, která se opírá o lexikometrickou (lexikografickou) analýzu slovníků Duden, Vocabolario Treccani (Slovník Treccani) a Slovník spisovného jazyka českého; - kontrastivní metoda sémanticko-lexikální parafráze. Analýza neoklasických konstituentů vychází z hypotézy švýcarského lingvisty Debrunnera (1917, str. 16) o "osudu" bezprostředních konstituentů ve smyslu jejich dalšího individuálního monolingválního vývoje (Einzelsprachlichkeit) a ve smyslu "vzniku sémantické propasti". Z výsledků provedené analýzy neoklasických konstituentů se ukazují: - shody v oblasti etymologické ve smyslu interlingvality; - rozdíly v oblasti morfologické; - rozdíly v oblasti sémantické (potvrzení hypotézy Debrunnera [1917, str. 16]); - rozpory mezi jazykovým použitím a jazykovou fixací (Sprachgebrauch versus Sprachfixierung, Scheller-Boltz 2013, str. 120); - stupeň produktivity konstituentů; - role jazykové kreativity (neologismy) a důležitost znalostí o světě (Weltwissen) (Linke/Nussbaumer/Portmann 2004, str. 257) s ohledem na porozumění (monosémantizace) slovotvorných neoklasických konstituentů. Předkládaná dizertační práce je výsledkem multidisciplinárního přístupu (výzkumu), který zasahuje mnoho lingvistických subdisciplín (etymologie, sémantika, morfologie, syntax, lexikologie, translatologie), a může být považována za první počin pokračujícího kontrastivního výzkumu, neboť používání neoklasických elementů jako bezprostředních konstituentů je na vzestupu a jejich podobnost je pouze zdánlivá, což může vést k nesprávným sémantickým závěrům v interlingválním kontextu (monolingvální interference). Výsledky výzkumu mohou následně sloužit k lexikografickým a translatologickým účelům v rámci kulturních jazykových reálií.
