Capitalism, Christian Compassion and Redemption in Modern Adaptations of Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analýza a porovnání moderních filmových adaptací knihy Vánoční koleda od Charlese Dickense za účelem určení toho, do jaké míry jsou typické motivy související s viktoriánskou érou a křesťanstvím, jmenovitě: kapitalismus, křesťanský soucit a vykoupení vykresleny s ohledem k původnímu příběhu. Za tímto účelem autor poskytuje řadu vybraných úryvků z knihy a filmů, které slouží ke stanovení míry přesnosti adaptací a odhalují možné odlišnosti v přístupu moderních adaptací k výše zmíněným motivům. Jednotlivými motivy se zabývají oddělené kapitoly, sloužící k zajištění správného pochopení rozdílů v moderních adaptacích a je poskytnut další kontext, jako motivace autora a nezbytné informace o společnosti, ve které žil. Filmy použité pro účely této práce : A Christmas Carol (1951), A Christmas Carol (1984), A Christmas Carol (1999), A Christmas Carol (2009).

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to compare and analyse modern movie adaptations of the book A Christmas Carol In Prose Being a Ghost Story of Christmas by Charles Dickens in order to determine how faithful they are to the original in their depiction of characteristic Victorian and Christian themes present in the story: capitalism, Christian compassion and redemption. To this end, the author will provide a number of selected illustrative extracts from the movies and the book to ascertain the level of accuracy of the adaptations and identify possible differences in modern approach to the themes in question. Each theme will be covered in a separate chapter alongside with other related information that will ensure proper understanding of possible differences in newer adaptations, such as relevant facts about the state of society Dickens’ lived in and his motivation behind including certain themes in his work. The modern adaptations used for this work will include primarily these movies: A Christmas Carol (1951), A Christmas Carol (1984), A Christmas Carol (1999), A Christmas Carol (2009).
