The importance of mental senior well-being in old people's homes

Abstract:

Má práce je zaměřena na seniory žijící v domovech pro seniory. Práce se zaměřuje především na důležitost duševní a sociální pohody, kterou se domovy pro seniory snaží klientům zajistit. Hlavním cílem práce je popsat, jakou roli hraje právě duševní a sociální pohoda, optimismus a celková spokojenost seniora, především ve vztahu k jeho zdravotnímu stavu a celkové kvalitě života. Práce se zabývá také tím, jak důležitý je lidský, empatický, individuální a celostní přístup personálu k seniorům, jakou roli zastávají společné aktivity a vzájemná komunikace seniorů v domovech pro seniory a zda tyto aspekty přispívají ke zlepšení zdravotního stavu seniora. Práce se opírá o cenné poznatky z oblasti sociální péče, psychosomatiky či pozitivní psychologie. V teoretické části práce jsou vymezeny pojmy jako stáří, duševní pohoda, kvalita života seniorů, popsány jsou různé teorie stárnutí, domovy pro seniory v České republice a nastíněn je i jejich vývoj. Dále je pozornost věnována možnosti, a především důležitosti, komunikace s nekomunikujícími klienty, klienty se specifickými potřebami či demencí. V této souvislosti je popsána například metoda reminiscence, validační terapie, rezoluční terapie apod. Pozornost je věnována tomu, zda jejich použití vede k lepšímu zdravotnímu, vnitřnímu a funkčnímu stavu seniora. V praktické části práce je popsáno výzkumné šetření, uskutečněné v Městském středisku sociálních služeb Oáza v Novém Městě nad Metují. Cílem tohoto kvalitativního šetření je pomocí rozhovorů se zaměstnanci a klienty tohoto střediska zjistit, jakou roli hraje duševní pohoda klienta ve vztahu k jeho zdraví a celkovému stavu. Pozornost je věnována také tomu, zda konkrétně toto středisko využívá při své činnosti různorodé metody komunikace s klienty se specifickými potřebami či demencí, o jaké metody jde, jaký vliv mají na zdravotní stav a kvalitu života seniora, či zda středisko využívá a respektuje také poznatky z oboru psychosomatiky.

Abstract:

My work is aimed to describe lives of seniors living in nursing homes. The work focuses mainly on the importance of mental and social well-being, which is provided by homes for the elderly. The work is supposed to describe the aspects of satisfaction of seniors which is affected by the role of senior mental and social well-being, optimism, all having influence on their health and overall quality of life. Moreover, the importance of human empathic individual and holistic approach of staff to seniors is discussed in the thesis together with the effect of joint activities and mutual communication in nursing homes contributing to improvement of the health in old people's homes. The work contains valuable knowledge from the field of social care, psychosomatics and positive psychology. The theoretical part is about thesis defining concepts such as the old age, mental well-being, quality of senior's life and various theories of aging, homes for the elderly in the Czech Republic and outlines their development. Furthermore, the work pays attention to importance, of communication with especially non-communicating clients, with the ones having special needs or dementia. There were used various methods such as the one of reminiscence, validation and resolution therapy and others and whether they contribute to better health, internal and functional condition of seniors. In the practical part the research survey conducted in the Municipal Center of Social Services Oasis in Nove Mesto nad Metuji is described. By interviewing the employees and clients of this center this qualitative survey found out, the importance of the clients' mental well-being in relation to their health and overall condition. There is also paid the attention to various methods of communication used with clients having specific needs or dementia and to methods having impact on the health and quality of senior lives. The work also focuses on using knowledge from the field of psychosomatics.
