Web usability and accessibility and their impact on the means of expression of the medium

Abstract:

Práce shrnuje základní rady, jak vytvořit takové webové stránky, které nekladou svým uživatelům zbytečné překážky. Část o použitelnosti se věnuje běžným uživatelům, přistupujícím k webu z nejčastěji používaného hardware, kterým je plně funkční osobní počítač; představuje nejčastější chyby webdesignerů, které uživatele zdržují, obtěžují či jinak frustrují. Část o přístupnosti pak nabízí přehled řešení problémů, kterým při práci s webem čelí nejrůzněji smyslově či mentálně postižení uživatelé, a také lidé přistupující k webu z netradičních zařízení jako jsou mobilní telefony. V závěrečné části je jednoduchý způsob testování jak použitelnosti, tak přístupnosti konkrétních webových stránek. Celou statí prochází motiv vyjadřovacích prostředků webu; některé z nich, jako jsou dynamické prvky stránek či audio, mohou za určitých okolností komplikovat používání webu; jiné, jako je prostý text, představují především pro postižené uživatele velmi přístupnou formu získávaných informací. Připomenut je v práci i koncept Webu 2.0, tedy vývojové stadium, v němž se podle některých publicistů web v současnosti nachází.

Abstract:

The paper summarizes the basic recommendations for preparing such web pages, that don't put any unnecessary obstacles in their users' ways to information. The chapter on web usability is focused on usual users, accesing web from usual harware, such are standard personal computers; the chapter shows the most common mistakes made by webdesigners which lead to wasting users' time, bothering users or frustrating users in any other way. The chapter on web accesibility is focused on users that are physically or mentally handicapped and users that are accesing web from unusual devices, such are cell phones or old computers with old browsers; solutions for the most common mistakes bothering such users are shown. Easy way of testing usability and accessibility of web pages is presented in the last chapter. The means of expression of World wide web are remembered through the paper; some of the means of expression, such are dynamic parts of web pages or audio, can harm the accesibility or usability of a web page; some other means of expression, such is a simple text, are a very accesible form of information, mostly for the disabled users. The concept of Web 2.0, which some commentators use to reflect the current state of World wide web, is also mentioned in the paper.
