History and activities of Nansenhjelpen: Norwegian humanitarian organization from the Czech point of view

Abstract:

The master thesis deals with the Norwegian humanitarian organisation Nansenhjelpen. The activities of organisation in 1937-1948 in Norway and Czechoslovakia are presented in the social and historical context, partner organisation both on the Norwegian and Czech side are presented together with the active members and co-workers of the organisation. Thesis focuses mainly on the activities in Czechoslovakia as this topic has been rarely discussed so far. One of the main chapters in the thesis describes a rescue campaign of Nansenhjelpen in which a group of about 37 children was transported from Czechoslovakia to Norway. Children were placed in foster families and 14 of them later fled to Sweden. Some of them were however sent back to Czechoslovakia on their parents' demand.

Abstract:

Práce představuje činnost norské humanitární organizace Nansenhjelpen v norském a českém prostředí v letech 1937 - 1948. Práce zasazuje organizaci do dobového kontextu, jsou prezentovány spolupracující organizace na obou stranách a osoby, které se na činnosti organizace aktivně podílely. Hlavní přínos práce spočívá ve zmapování činnosti organizace v Československu, protože tomuto tématu nebyla doposud věnována pozornost. Jednu ze stěžejních kapitol práce tvoří popis záchranné akce, při které z Československa do Norska vycestovala skupina asi 37 dětí, které našly domov v norských pěstounských rodinách. Část dětí se v roce 1942 na přání svých rodičů vrátila do Československa, ale zhruba 14 dětí se podařilo převézt do bezpečí do Švédska.
