Czech lands as social constructs and dynamic processes

Abstract:

Tuto dizertační práci tvoří komentovaný soubor šesti vybraných samostatných příspěvků, jež jsou, stejně jako celá dizertace, zakotveny v nové regionální geografii; klíčovým teoreticko-metodologickým východiskem je zde Paasiho teorie institucionalizace regionů. Jednotlivé příspěvky cílí na rozvoj teoretického poznání, především konceptů regionu a regionální identity, přičemž je vyzdvihnut přístup zkoumání institucionalizace a deinstitucionalizace regionů (zejména regionální reprodukce a transformace) z pohledu běžných lidí – pomocí konceptu percepčního regionu. Významnou součástí této dizertační práce je komplexnější představení nové regionální geografie, než jaké dosud nabízejí české texty, jejím primárním cílem však je diskutovat české historické země (především Čechy a Moravu) jako sociální konstrukty a dynamické procesy. Provedené výzkumy rozvíjející teorii totiž zároveň ukazují, že v případě těchto historických regionů je problematickou jednak otázka jejich „existence“, jednak otázka jejich vymezení (hranic). De iure zrušení územně správního statusu českých zemí na konci roku 1948 představuje významnou deinstitucionalizaci těchto regionů, díky které nabyli někteří lidé přesvědčení, že zmíněné regiony zanikly, a tedy již neexistují. Administrativní reformy z let 1960 a 2000 pak u řady lidí vedly ke změně vnímání (a tedy k transformaci) Čech a Moravy a jejich hranice, neboť tito lidé začali ztotožňovat starou/historickou hranici (zemí) s hranicemi „nových“ administrativních regionů (krajů). Kraje jsou nicméně velmi významné pro reprodukci českých zemí, neboť napomáhají udržovat povědomí o těchto historických regionech.

Abstract:

The dissertation consists of a commented set of six selected individual contributions, which, like the entire thesis, are anchored in the new regional geography; Paasi’s institutionalization of regions theory is the key theoretical-methodological starting point here. Individual contributions aim to develop theoretical knowledge, especially the concepts of region and regional identity, while the approach of examining the institutionalization and deinstitutionalization of regions (especially regional reproduction and transformation) from the perspective of ordinary people – using the concept of perceptual region – is highlighted. A more complex presentation of the new regional geography than what Czech texts have offered so far is an important part of this thesis. Still, its main goal is to discuss the Czech historical lands (primarily Bohemia and Moravia) as social constructs and dynamic processes. The conducted research developing the theory also shows that in the case of these historical regions, the question of their “existence” and the question of their delimitation (boundaries) are problematic. The de jure abolition of the Czech lands’ administrative status at the end of 1948 represents a significant deinstitutionalization of these regions, which led some people to believe that the mentioned regions had disappeared and thus no longer existed. Then, the 1960 and 2000 administrative reforms led many people to change the perception of Bohemia and Moravia and their common boundary (meaning the transformation of such regions and their boundary), as these people began to identify the old/historical (land) boundary with the boundaries of “new” administrative regions (kraje). Nevertheless, the kraje are very important for the Czech lands’ reproduction, as they help maintain awareness of these historical regions.
