The geometric structure of singular variational equations and the Dirac theory of constraints

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je studium Lagrangeových systému, které se nazývají singulární či degenerované. Cílem studia Lagrangeových systémů je nalezení tzv.?dynamického obrazu?, tj.úplného systému řešení příslušných pohybových rovnic (obyčejných diferenciálních rovnic 2. řádu). Pro regulární Lagrangeovy systémy je řešení jednoduché - dynamika je úplně popsána jednodimenzionální foliací fázového prostoru. Pro singulární Lagrangeovy systémy je situace mnohem složitejší. Musíme aplikovat tzv. geometrický vazebný algoritmus, jehož cílem je nalezení systému maximálních podvariet fázového prostoru, na nichž je pohyb realizován. Uvedená metoda představuje matematicky korektní a úplné řešení úlohy nalézt a úplně popsat dynamiku singulárních Lagrangeových systémů, která byla poprvé formulována Diracem v roce 1950. Diracův heuristický postup ovšem na rozdíl od geometrického algoritmu často vede k nejednoznačným výsledkům. Cílem práce je provést pomocí geometrického algoritmu analýzu konkrétního příkladu a najít úplné řešení příslušného dynamického problému a jeho symetrie.

Abstract:

In this work, singular (degenerate) Lagrangian systems are studied. The aim is to find the corresponding ?dynamical picture?, i.e. the complete solution of the equations of motion (which are 2-nd order ODE). In case of regular Lagrangians the solution is easy: the dynamics is completely described by a one-dimensional foliation of the phase space. For singular Lagrangians the situation is much more difficult. It is necessary to apply the so-called geometric constraint algorithm which provides a system of so-called final constraint submanifolds (where the dynamics proceeds). This method is a mathematically correct solution of the problem to find and describe the singular Lagrangian dynamics, first considered by Dirac in 1950. Contrary to the geometric approach the Dirac?s heuristic method often provides incorrect results. Our aim is to analyze completely the dynamics and symmetries of a concrete singular Lagrangian by the geometric approach.
