Digitalisation of a book fund

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá digitalizací knihovního fondu. Cílem práce je popsat problematiku digitalizace knih především z pohledu knihoven v návaznosti na půjčování elektronických knih, používané formáty elektronických knih, druhy ochrany a typy čteček. V bakalářské práci je popsán proces tvorby elektronických knih v Městské knihovně v Praze a jsou v ní uvedeny výsledky průzkumu zájmu z řad studentů a absolventů vysokých škol o půjčování elektronických knih v knihovně. V první části se práce věnuje uvedení do problematiky digitalizace, potřebě digitalizace a jejím výhodám a problémům. V současné době jsou největšími problémy legislativní rámec, neochota autorů a nakladatelů vydávat elektronické knihy, nutnost užití DRM ochrany a velké množství formátů, které omezují výběr čteček elektronických knih. Následně tato práce popisuje možné půjčování elektronických knih v České republice v kontextu se Spojenými státy americkými a digitální knihovny. V praktické části bakalářská práce seznámí čtenáře s Městskou knihovnou v Praze, především s jejím Oddělením digitalizace, procesem tvorby elektronické knihy a s možnostmi jejího půjčení. V závěru práce je vyhodnocen průzkum realizovaný formou dotazníku, který souvisí s elektronickými knihami a jejich potenciálním půjčením.

Abstract:

This Bachelor's thesis focuses on digitalisation of a book fund. The goal of the thesis is to describe the problematics of digitalisation from the library's point of view following on lending of e-books, their formats, means of protection and types of e-readers. In the thesis there is the process of creation of e-books in The Municipal Library of Prague described and also the results of a survey conducted among students and absolvents of universities regarding their interest in borrowing e-books from the library. In the first part the thesis deals with the problematics of digitalisation, the need to digitise and its advantages and problems. At this time the biggest issues are legislative framework, reluctance of authors and publishers to issue e-books, the need of a DRM protection and finally there are plenty of formats limiting the selection of e-readers. Subsequently the thesis analyses possible ways of lending e-books in The Czech Republic and in libraries in the United States. Practical part of the thesis introduces The Municipal Library of Prague and the Digitalisation department especially. It presents the process of creation of an e-book and the ways of lending it. Last chapter evaluates the results of the survey in a form of an answer sheet on the subject of e-books and its borrowing.
