Abstract:
Forest area is a core variable in national monitoring for biodiversity conservation in general. Cameroon, covering an area of 475 442 km2, is usually described as a microcosm of Tropical Africa, mainly as regards of its vegetation, which is a rich condensation of the whole of Africa’s intertropical vegetation. Právo: Given the paucity of data and interest to gain a more detailed understanding of the potential role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation, it is necessary to investigate how forest assessment and changed human use will interact. Field work to be carried out in Cameroon (involving choice experiments, analysis of data sets and cultural services, and semi-structured interviews) will aim to answer the following key questions:1) What products do people derive from the forest under normal circumstances and in times of crisis, how is this changing and how will it change in the future?2) What are the present and likely future impacts of human use on forests?3) What are the implications for the role of the forest in sustaining indigenous people and/or forest dependent communities livelihood? The questions will be answered by combining empirical socio-economic and biophysical local level data with regional climate projections in order to understand present and future human-forest interactions.
