Contact Geometry in Physics

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se věnujeme kontaktní geometrii a jejím aplikacím v teorii diferenciálních rovnic a fyzikálních disciplinách, zejména optice, termodynamice a\linebreak mechanice. Nejdřív zkoumáme parciální diferenciální rovnice prvního řádu a jejich charakteristické křivky geometricky. V geometrické optice bereme optické systémy jako symplektické nebo kontaktní transformace a zaobíráme se Fermatovým principem.\linebreak Pak odvodíme Maxwellovy relace v termodynamice a reálné materiály reprezentujeme Legendreovými podvarietami v termodynamickém prostoru. V poslední kapitole pak diskutujeme Hamiltonovu-Jacobiho rovnici a výhody užití kontaktní struktury místo symplektické. Zejména pak eliminujeme problem mnohoznačnosti akce po správné trajektorii. Jeden z hlavných cílů tyto práce je ukázat že tyhle tři nejstarší fyzikální discipliny mohou být popsány matematicky pomocí kontaktní geometrie.

Abstract:

In this thesis we study contact geometry and its applications in the theory of differential equations and various physical disciplines, namely optics, thermodynamics and mechanics. We first describe a geometric viewpoint of the partial differential equations of order one and their characteristic curves. In geometrical optics we treat optical systems as symplectic or contact transformations and we study Fermat's principle. We then derive Maxwell's thermodynamic relations and represent real materials as Legendre submanifolds in a thermodynamic space. In the last chapter we discuss the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the advantages of using the contact structure instead of the symplectic one. In particular this eliminates the problem of multivaluedness of the on-shell action. One of the main goals of this thesis is to show that these three historically oldest physical disciplines can be described by the same mathematics via contact geometry.
