The represetnation of homosexuality in sex education textbooks

Abstract:

This thesis depicts the manner in which homosexuality is represented in the sex education textbooks. It is based on Michel Foucault’s concept of the power- knowledge- pleasure regime, discussing the way sexuality comes into discourse and becomes either the instrument of power or the point of resistance, disturbing the power structures. Sex education is presented in the Czech context. The author outlines the main points of public discussion on the content of sex education and layout of particular textbooks; the discussion which reflects the power struggles in the field of knowledge production and the reinforcement of certain regimes of truth. The conclusion of the theoretical section includes a brief overview of previous research focused on similar issues. The analytical section of the thesis is based on qualitative and quantitative content analysis of the educational materials designed to facilitate sex education. The analysis has shown that all spotlighted materials carefully conceptualize the term ‘homosexuality‘ as a normal minority sex orientation and declare an effort to act in favor of equal treatment. However, in the meantime they take the heteronormative approach by isolating the issue into a separate section, linking homosexuality with problematic topics, neglecting to take into consideration that the reader might be of homosexual orientation, presenting heterosexuality as the norm that serves as the basis for comparison and evaluation of other categories.

Abstract:

Táto práca je venovaná reprezentácii homosexuality v príručkách sexuálnej výchovy. Opiera sa o koncept režimu moci – vedenia – slasti Michela Foucaulta, pojednávajúci o spôsobe, akým sexualita vstupuje do diskurzu a stáva sa pritom nástrojom moci alebo naopak bodom odporu narúšajúcim mocenské štruktúry. Sexuálna výchova je predstavená v českom kontexte. Autorka načrtáva základné body verejnej diskusie o jej obsahovej náplni a podobe prislúchajúcich učebníc, ktorá reflektuje mocenské spory o produkciu vedenia a posilňovanie určitého režimu pravdy. Teoretickú časť uzatvára stručný prehľad predchádzajúcich zahraničných výskumov zameraných na danú problematiku. Analytická časť práce je postavená na kvalitatívnej a kvantitatívnej obsahovej analýze vzdelávacích materiálov určených na výučbu sexuálnej výchovy. Analýza preukázala, že všetky materiály dôkladne konceptualizujú homosexualitu ako normálnu menšinovú orientáciu a deklarujú snahu pôsobiť v prospech rovného zaobchádzania. Zároveň však uplatňujú heteronormatívny prístup tým, že izolujú túto problematiku do samostatnej kapitoly, často ju spájajú s problematickými témami, zanedbávajú možnosť homosexuálnej orientácie čitateľa, predstavujú heterosexualitu ako normu, ktorá je základom pre porovnávanie a hodnotenie ostatných kategórií.
