Is it still a cabaret? The phenomenon of cabaret and its place in contemporary cultural space with the case study of Kabaret Punklesque

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem kabaretu, který je v různých podobách součástí kulturního prostoru od 19. století (potažmo od středověku). Konotace spojené s tímto slovem v současné společnosti se vzhledem k jeho vývoji a celkové neohraničenosti pojmu velice různí a kabaret se prolíná s dalšími oblastmi kultury. Autorka shrnuje okolnosti vzniku původních kabaretů a náplně kabaretních programů, které porovnává se současnými podobami kabaretu. Existuje či se utváří něco jako „nový kabaret“ nebo jde jen o aktualizovanou formu kabaretu původního? Jaké je poslání a motivace současných tvůrců kabaretu a jaké toto označení skutečně přináší výsledky a důsledky, jestliže je de facto velice neurčité? Na tyto otázky autorka odpovídá především prostřednictvím případové studie pražského Kabaretu Punklesque. Případová studie obsahuje komplexní portrét Kabaretu Punklesque, který vznikl z polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a zúčastněného pozorování. Součástí výzkumu je i dotazníkové šetření mezi potenciálními i stávajícími diváky, cílené na jejich vnímání Kabaretu Punklesque i fenoménu kabaretu celkově.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of cabaret, which in various forms has been a part of the cultural space since the 19th century (or since the Middle Ages). The connotations associated with this word in contemporary society vary widely due to its development and the overall boundlessness of the term, and the cabaret blends with other areas of culture. The author summarizes the circumstances of the origin of the original cabarets and the content of cabaret programs, which she compares with the current forms of cabaret. Is there something like a "new cabaret" or is it just an updated form of the original cabaret? What is the mission and motivation of current cabaret creators, and what does this label really bring about results and consequences if it is de facto very vague? The author answers these questions mainly through a case study of the Kabaret Punklesque based in Prague, CZ. The case study contains a comprehensive portrait of the Kabaret Punklesque, which arose from semi-structured interviews and observation. Part of the research is a questionnaire survey among potential and current viewers aimed at their perception of the Kabaret Punklesque and the phenomenon of the cabaret in general.
