Women and US politics: An Analysis of Participation and Involvement in Politics among American Women

Abstract:

This thesis examines the increasing participation of American women in politics, particularly focusing on the general elections of 2018, 2020, and 2022. These years marked a significant rise in the number of congresswomen, challenging the notion that earlier increases were exceptions. The findings reveal a notable partisan shift, with a predominance of Democratic women elected to the 116th Congress (2019-2021), in contrast to the Republican surge in the 117th Congress (2021-2023). The thesis further explores the motivating factors behind the election of non-incumbent female candidates during these years. These women were driven by issues such as reproductive rights, education, the economy, gun control laws, a desire to enhance diversity in Congress, and the rhetoric of Donald Trump.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá rostoucí účast amerických žen v politice, se zaměřením na parlamentní volby v letech 2018, 2020 a 2022, kdy právě tehdy političky významně zvýšily svou účast v americkém Kongresu. Z analýzy je zřejmé, že zvýšená účast nebyla pouhou výjimkou, ale naopak rostoucím trendem. Dále práce odhaluje pozoruhodnou změnu ve stranické příslušnosti, kdy ve volbách roku 2018 drtivě zvítězily demokratky, zatímco v roce 2020 bylo mezi nově zvolenými ženami více republikánek. Cílém práce bylo taktéž objasnit motivující faktory nově zvolených političek kandidujících v letech 2018, 2020 a 2022. Z provedené analýzy vyplývá, že mezi motivujícími faktory byla témata jako reprodukční práva, vzdělávání, ekonomika, zákony o zbraních, dále také touha větší diverzity v Kongresu či rétorika Donalda Trumpa.
