The Progress of Homosexuality in Michael Cunningham´s The Hours

Abstract:

The thesis deals with Michael Cunningham's novel The Hours and its connection to homosexuality. The individual characters are presented and their struggle with themselves which can be influenced by their uncertainty with their sexuality is analysed. The thesis presents the historical and social context referring to the process of accepting the homosexual minority, hence it exemplify influence of the society on the characters who have to deal with social conventions. Therefore, the progress of homosexuality is presented on the individual progress of the characters and also on the changes within the society in its attitude towards the minority.

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá dílem Michaela Cunninghama Hodiny a zkoumá jeho spojitost s tématem homosexuality. Na jednotlivých charakterech je demonstrován jejich vnitřní boj s jejich psychikou, který může být ovlivněn s pocitem nejistoty s jejich sexuální orientací. Práce také předkládá historické a sociální souvislosti, které se týkají akceptování homosexuální minority a dokládá tak vliv na jednotlivé postavy a jejich boj se společenskými konvencemi. Vývoj homosexuality je tak demonstrován jak na individuálním vývoji charakterů, tak na vývoji postojů společnosti.
